1. A system for securely transporting medications or other items, the system comprising: a central computer system;a plurality of lockable, separately transportable relay boxes, each relay box further comprising: a software controlled lid unlockable upon authorization from the central computer system; a memory storing a globally unique electronically readable identifier; a sensor that can detect unauthorized forced entry to the relay box; and a display; andan electronic network over which the central computer system authorizes access to the interiors of the relay boxes. 2. The system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of checkpoints in communication with the central computer system over the electronic network, each of the plurality of checkpoints equipped to electronically read the electronically readable identifiers from the relay boxes and inform the central computer system over the electronic network of the locations of the relay boxes when the relay boxes are read at the checkpoints. 3. The system of claim 2, wherein at least one of the relay boxes includes a locking system operable by equipment at the checkpoints, without the need for power provided by the relay box. 4. The system of claim 3, wherein at least some of the locking systems are magnetically controlled. 5. The system of claim 2, wherein at least one of the relay boxes comprises an intrusion detection system that includes: a microcontroller;a nonvolatile read/write memory;a battery; anda detection mechanism;and wherein the controller receives input from the detection mechanism to detect an intrusion into the relay box, and records information about the intrusion in the nonvolatile read/write memory. 6. The system of claim 2, wherein at least some of the relay boxes are equipped with nonvolatile electronically-alterable displays, such that the display of a particular relay box can be altered at one of the checkpoints and remains readable without drawing power from the relay box when the relay box is removed from the checkpoint. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the electronic network is wireless at least in part, and wherein at least one of the relay boxes comprises: a battery; anda medium range wireless radio transceiver powered by the battery, the wireless radio transceiver in communication with the electronic network. 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the battery is rechargeable in place in the relay box, or is replaceable, or both. 9. The system of claim 7, further comprising a wireless location system, wherein at least some of the relay boxes include wireless transceivers in communication with the wireless location system to report their locations to the central computer system. 10. The system of claim 9, wherein at least some of the relay boxes communicate with the wireless location system using the medium range wireless radio transceiver. 11. The system of claim 10, wherein at least some of the relay boxes communicate with the wireless location system using another wireless transceiver separate from the medium range wireless radio transceiver. 12. The system of claim 9, wherein the wireless location system is a real time wireless location system. 13. The system of claim 1, wherein, for each of the relay boxes, all electronic components of the respective relay box are isolated into a module removable from the relay box. 14. A method of controlling access to an item, the method comprising: providing, at a docking station, a transportable lockable relay box, the relay box further comprising: a software controlled lid unlockable upon authorization from a central computer system, a memory storing a globally unique electronically readable identifier, a sensor that can detect unauthorized forced entry to the relay box, a battery, a medium range wireless radio transceiver powered by the battery, and a display;receiving into the relay box an item to be transported;receiving from the central computer system via the medium range wireless radio transceiver an indication that the relay box is to be locked;automatically locking the relay box in response to the indication from the central computer system; anddispatching the relay box to a destination. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the docking station is a first docking station, the method further comprising: receiving the relay box at the destination;placing the relay box in a second docking station;receiving from the central computer system via the electronic network an indication that the relay box is to be unlocked; andautomatically unlocking the relay box. 16. A method of controlling access to an item, the method comprising: providing a transportable lockable relay box, the relay box further comprising: a software controlled lid unlockable upon authorization from a central computer system, a memory storing a globally unique electronically readable identifier, a sensor that can detect unauthorized forced entry to the relay box, a display, a battery, and a medium range wireless radio transceiver powered by the battery;receiving into the relay box an item to be transported;receiving from the central computer system via the medium range wireless radio transceiver an indication that the relay box is to be locked;automatically locking the relay box in response to the indication from the central computer system; anddispatching the relay box to a destination. 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising: receiving the relay box at the destination;receiving from the central computer system via the medium range wireless radio transceiver an indication that the relay box is to be unlocked; andautomatically unlocking the relay box. 18. The method of claim 17, further comprising, before automatically unlocking the relay box: authenticating a user of the system; andreceiving from the authenticated user evidence that the user is in possession of the relay box. 19. The method of claim 16, further comprising: receiving wireless signals from the relay box by a wireless location system; andderiving from the wireless signals by the wireless location system a location of the relay box. 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the location of the relay box is derived in real time.
