A simple, self-propelling particle system is disclosed that can deliver a cargo through flowing aqueous solutions. This disclosure provides a non-aqueous composition comprising: (i) particles formed of a carbonate salt and having an average diameter of about 100 μm or less; and (ii) an acid in solid form. The particles may be associated with a cargo molecule or particle. In mouse models of severe hemorrhage, the propelled particles are able to deliver a procoagulant enzyme and halt bleeding.

1. A method of conveying a cargo molecule or cargo particle through an aqueous fluid, the method comprising providing a non-aqueous composition comprising: (i) particles formed of a carbonate salt and having an average diameter of about 100 μm or less; and (ii) an acid in solid form, wherein the par
1. A method of conveying a cargo molecule or cargo particle through an aqueous fluid, the method comprising providing a non-aqueous composition comprising: (i) particles formed of a carbonate salt and having an average diameter of about 100 μm or less; and (ii) an acid in solid form, wherein the particles of (i) or (ii) are bound to or encapsulate said cargo molecule or cargo particle and the acid when dissolved in the fluid is capable of reacting with the carbonate salt to produce CO2; wherein the method further comprises introducing the composition into said fluid whereupon CO2 bubbles are released from the particles of (i) propelling those particles and the bound or encapsulated cargo molecule or cargo particle through the fluid; and wherein the acid is TXA-NH3±. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the aqueous fluid is in motion and the conveying is in a direction having a component opposite to the direction of motion of the fluid. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the conveying is in a direction having an upward component. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluid is a biological fluid. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein said conveying is in vivo. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluid is blood. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said introducing of the composition into the fluid comprises placement on or in an area of bleeding. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the area of bleeding is in a body cavity. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the body cavity is a uterus. 10. The method of claim 6, wherein said introducing of the composition into the fluid comprises intravenous administration. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition consists of (i), (ii) and said associated cargo molecule or cargo particle. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the cargo molecule or cargo particle is adsorbed onto the particles of (i). 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the particles of (i) are porous with a pore size of about 10 nm to about 100 nm. 14. The method of claim 1, wherein the carbonate salt is a physiologically acceptable carbonate salt. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the carbonate salt is CaCO3. 16. The method of claim 1, wherein the cargo molecule is a biologically active agent or the cargo particle comprises a biologically active agent. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the biologically active agent promotes clotting or diminishes clots or clotting. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the agent comprises thrombin. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is present in a capsule, in tablet form, in or on a microcarrier, in or on a non-aqueous carrier, on or within the material of a gauze, a wound dressing, an instrument for cleaning wounds, a balloon for surgical application, a sponge or a nasal packing material, or within or on a delivery device. 20. A method of conveying a cargo molecule or cargo particle through a biological fluid in vivo, the method comprising providing a non-aqueous composition comprising: (i) porous particles formed of CaCO3 and having an average diameter of about 100 μm or less; and (ii) a physiologically acceptable acid in solid form, wherein (i) is bound to or encapsulates said cargo molecule or cargo particle and the acid when dissolved in the fluid is capable of reacting with the CaCO3 to release CO2 bubbles from the particles of (i); wherein the method further comprises introducing the composition into the biological fluid; and wherein the acid is TXA-NH3±. 21. The method of claim 20, wherein the biological fluid is blood. 22. The method of claim 21, wherein introducing of the composition into the blood comprises placement on or in an area of bleeding. 23. The method of claim 20, wherein the cargo molecule or cargo particle comprises a protein, a nucleic acid or a polysaccharide which is adsorbed onto the particles of (i). 24. The method of claim 20, wherein the cargo molecule is a biologically active agent or the cargo particle comprises a biologically active agent. 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the biologically active agent promotes clotting or diminishes clots or clotting.
