The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to allow a user to scroll through two or more selectable options in the first region, and as the user scrolls through the two or more selectable options, the selectable options move. 5. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the second region has a plurality of predefined touch regions that each corresponds to a different button. 6. The HVAC controller of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to display a predefined fixed segment graphical icon of a button in the second region of the touch screen display, wherein touching the button in the second region of the display causes the controller to highlight a different selectable option in the first region of the touch screen display. 7. An HVAC controller, comprising: a controller;a touch screen display operatively coupled to the controller, the touch display comprising: a first region having an array of fixed segment pixels arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns for displaying an image in a dot matrix format;a second region having a plurality of predefined fixed segment graphical icons;the controller is configured to display one or more selectable options in the first region of the display for selection by a user, the controller is further configured to accept selection of a displayed selectable option by detecting a user touch of the displayed selectable option via the touch screen display; andwherein the controller is further configured to recognize a swiping motion in the first region to navigate between two or more selectable options. 8. An HVAC controller, comprising: a controller;a touch screen display operatively coupled to the controller, the touch display comprising: a first region having an array of fixed segment pixels arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns for displaying an image in a dot matrix format;a second region having a plurality of predefined fixed segment graphical icons;the controller is configured to display one or more selectable options in the first region of the display for selection by a user, the controller is further configured to accept selection of a displayed selectable option by detecting a user touch of the displayed selectable option via the touch screen display;wherein the one or more selectable options comprise: one or more programmable options used to set settings that are used for controlling subsequent operation and/or functionality of the HVAC controller;one or more menu options used to navigate to a menu that allows a user to change a programmable option that modifies subsequent operation and/or functionality of the HVAC controller; orone or more programmable options used to set settings that are used for controlling subsequent operation and/or functionality of the HVAC controller, and one or more menu options used to navigate to a menu that allows a user to change a programmable option that modifies subsequent operation and/or functionality of the HVAC controller. 9. The HVAC controller of claim 10, wherein the first region simultaneously displays two or more programmable options for selection, and the controller defines an active touch area for each of the two or more programmable options. 12. The HVAC controller of claim 10, wherein the controller is configured to highlight a selected programmable option. 13. The HVAC controller of claim 10, wherein the controller is configured to highlight a programmable option upon a first touch, and to select the programmable option upon a second touch. 14. The HVAC controller of claim 10, wherein the controller is configured to allow a user to scroll through two or more programmable options in the first region, and as the user scrolls through the two or more programmable options, the programmable options move in a vertical direction. 17. An HVAC controller, comprising: a controller;a touch screen display operatively coupled to the controller, the touch display comprising: a first region having an array of fixed segment pixels arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns for displaying an image in a dot matrix format;a second region having a plurality of predefined fixed segment graphical icons;the controller is configured to display one or more selectable options in the first region of the display for selection by a user;the controller is configured to display a predefined fixed segment graphical icon of a button in the second region of the touch screen display, wherein touching the button in the second region of the display causes the controller to highlight a selectable option in the first region of the touch screen display; andthe controller is further configured to accept selection of a highlighted selectable option by detecting a user touch of a highlighted selectable option via the touch screen display. 18. The HVAC controller of claim 17, wherein touching the button in the second region of the display again causes the controller to highlight another selectable option in the first region of the touch screen display.
