In order to investigate the possibility of methane conversion reaction by photocatalysis, methane to ethane, athylene and propane reaction was progressed with the transition metal catalytic system. The most effective support was TiO₂(anatase type) because it absorbed all the ranges of wave length of Hg high pressure lamp. Various transition metals were impregnated on TiO₂, and partially oxidized.(at 500℃ for 2hrs with limited air) When they were used in methane conversion reaction, only some metals such as Cu, Ru, Ag, Ir, Cd, Pt and Pd showed activity above 0.2%. The results are as follows ; ethane yield activity - Pd > Pt> Cd > Ir> Cu > Ru ≡ Ag mechanism - 4CH₄+O₂→ 2C₂H6 + 2H₂O ethylene yield activity - Pd > Cu > Ag > Pt > Ru > Ir> Cd mechanism - 2CH₄+ O₂→ C₂H₄+ 2H₂O propane yield activity - Pd > Pt > Ir> Cd > Ag > Cu > Ru mechanism - 3CH₄+ O₂→ C₃H8 + 2H₂O Though it showed the different results in polymerization of methane on various metals, Pd was the most effective one for methane to ethane, ethylene and propane reaction. When the methane conversion activity was tested after reduction(at 300℃ for 2hrs with H₂) of each metal, it was found that ethylene yield and selectivity were very sensitive with the valence of metal. Therefore, it was concluded that valence of metal must be controlled precisely. When each metal was perfectly oxidized(at 500℃ for 2hrs with air), it was found that Cu and Ag were very effective on producing ethylene with the valence compensation between oxidized and reduced metals. Pt/TiO₂produced hydrocarbons over C₃. And Pd/TiO₂ was the most effective catalyst for methane to ethylene reaction, and it also showed the highst ethylene selectivity. Finally, it was known that Pd/TiO₂was the optimum catalyst for the methane conversion reaction by photoreaction when it was oxidized perfectly.
