The propulsive efficiency of a ship can be determined by multiplication of quasi-propulsive efficiency is comprised of hull efficiency, propeller efficiency and relative rotative efficiency, where the last term represents the effect of change of efficiency due to the propeller being placed at the ship stern. The hull efficiency and relative rotative efficiency can be determined correctly under the knowledge of hull and propeller interaction whereas the determination of propeller efficiency is valid under the knowledge of flow characteristic at the ship stern. To improve the propulsive efficiency of a ship, capability of experimental verification of the elementary propulsive efficiencies, supplemented by theoretical analysis, is essential. The overall qualitative relationships between the characteristics of hull geometries and propulsive effciencies can be found from the statistical inference of the experimental data and the theoretical analysis will prove it quantitatively. The design of propellers to account for the interaction of hull-propeller and consideration of flow characteristics at the stern also needs improvements. The first part of the project undertook the experimental work of identifying the elements closely related to the propulsive efficiency and its statistical analysis. The second part of the project managed the theoretical analysis of stern flow and its numerically provided the necessary data for identification of propulsive elements and design of propellers. Third and final part of the project was to theoretically determine the effective wake, thrust deduction factor, relative rotative efficiency, etc. which arises due to hull-propeller interaction The aim of this research was to identify the hull geometric elements which affects the propulsive efficiency and to develop a method for improvement of ship stern form via experimental and theoretical methods. (1st Part of the Project) An experimental study on the stern flow and hull form modification. Concentration on slow full ships led to a formation of new series of ships based on Series 60, block coefficient 0.8, Towing test were performed on this series and data were accumulated according to the ITTC method. Statistical analysis are performed for the new data, Series 60 data and MARAD data from U.S. Maritime Administration. Regression equation is obtained from statistical analysis of block coefficients and wave making resistance of slow full ships. Asymptotic formula for the total resistance is obtained according to Hughes assumption using the above results. Relationship for the flow at the propeller plane and the wake distribution is investigated by observing the flow around the ship hull. By utilizing this regression equation for effective wake at the propeller section is found and the wake region is divided into upper and by the statistical analysis. The ship coefficients for the stern part which minimizes the total resistance are found from the regression equations. Conditions for the maximization of wake gain and equalization is sought. Supportive information leading to propeller design and theoretical prediction of wake distribution is also sought. Reformed stern form is obtained from the results of statistical analysis and thus the possibility of improvement of propulsive characteristics is shown. (2nd Part of the Project) A theoretical study on the viscous stern flowfield: Research to numerically analyse the viscous flow around the ship stern with propeller is performed. To this end, the three dimensional turbulent boundary layer analysis method is surveyed and analysed. Numerical implementation by finite difference is established. The basis for a non-orthogonal coordinate system conforming a given hull form and a numerical analysis method for Navier-Stokes equation is used to generate body-fitted non-orthogonal grid system and finite volume method is sused to numerically solve the Navier-Stokes equation. The developed numerical code is applied to compute the flow around Wigley hull form and Series 60, Cb=0.8, and compared to existing experimental data. Efforts are concentrated to improvement of the numerical code for higher accuracy by comparing to the experimental data. The numerical method for analysis of ship stern flow considering the viscous effect still leaves room for improvement of numerical form representation at the stern and stern but is still capable of detecting subtle changes in stern form when compared with the experimental data of the lst part of the project. It is proved that furnishment of wake distribution information accurate enough for the design of propellers is also possible. (3rd Part of the Project) Analysis of the interaction between the stern flow and propeller: The flow pattern of ship hull is represented as a vortex distribution and the interaction of hull-propeller is described theoretically inhomogeneous stern flow field is expressed as an integral equation which is solved numerically. Comparison with experimental data conforms the validity of the theoretical model. prediction of the effective flow field lends direct information leading to propeller design and performance estimation. The consideratio of non-uniform flow field at the propeller section is a major improvement over current method of uniform flow. Accurate analysis of propeller in steady and unsteady state is enabled through more precise prediction of flow field around the propeller via use of panel method employing hyperboloidal element. The analysis of propeller of large skew, which yields inaccurate results when lifting surface theory employed, is made possible. The accurate analysis of non-uniform unsteady flow field around the propeller enables both the estimation of propeller excitational force and the prediction of relative rotative efficiency. Numerical implementation of the boundary value problem solver employing hyperboloidal panel element is applied to Series 60, Cb=8.0, to theoretically predict the thrust deduction factor. New method, extending the panel method for prediction of the shape conforming to the given pressure distributions, is devised to replace the existing streamline tracing method.
