The general fracture behavior and tempered martensite embrittlement (TME) have been analyzed in terms of the variation in intrinsic matrix toughness with alloying additions and the relative variation of the intergranular and transgranular toughness which is associated with the carbides formation, impurity segregation, and alloying additions, in 4140-Ni and 4140-Si steels. Charpy impact testing was performed in order to investigate the fracture mode as a function of test temperature.
In 4140-Si steel, the transgranular brittle fracture becomes a primary brittle fracture mode with decreasing test temperature since Si-addition decreases the low-temperature intrinsic toughness of matrix and hence the transgranular toughness. In 4140-Ni steels, however, the transgranular brittle fracture occurs at very low test temperature in the nearly absence of the grain boundary carbides since Ni-addition increases the low-temperature intrinsic matrix toughness and hence the transgranular toughness. In addition, the intergranular brittle fracture is a predominant fracture mode even at low test temperatures (in the presence of coarse grain boundary carbides) because Ni-addition increases the transgranular toughness and the formation of coarse grain boundary carbides decrease the integranular toughness. The different fracture behavior between these steels is attributed to the variation of intrinsic matrix toughness with alloying additions. Hence, the variation in intrinsic matrix toughness with alloying additions can play a fundamental role in controlling the fracture behavior for commercial alloy steels.
In 4140-Ni and 4140-Si steels, TME is the intergranular brittle type which is caused by the incorporated action of the carbides and impurities at the grain boundaries. In 4140 steel where Ni-addition increases the low-temperature intrinsic toughness of matrix, the degree of activation of the grain boundary carbides for the intergranular brittle fracture in an embrittled condition becomes very large even at -196?. In addition, the relatively high content of impurities can increase the severity of intergranular brittle fracture. In 4140-si steel, however, since Si-addition decreases the low-temperature intrinsic matrix toughness, the intergranular to transgranular brittle fracture transition with decreasing test temperature takes place, despite the presence of carbides and impurities of high content at the grain boundaries in an embrittled condition. At lower test temperatures, the degree of activation of intergranular brittle fracture becomes thus smaller in an embrittled condition, in comparison with that in 4140-Ni steel. Thus, the fracture behavior in TME can be controlled by the relative variation of the intergranular toughness(which is associated with the carbides and impurities at the grain boundaries) and the transgranular toughness (which is correlated fundamentally with the intrinsic matrix toughness with alloying additions).
