Recently, demands for structural design by direct stress analysis and reduction of construction cost are increasing due to the emergence of new type vessels such as double hull tanker and SES and increasing labor cost. To cope with theses demandes, development of new technologies to design rational and economic ship structures is necessary. Structural design technologies for construction of more rational and economic ship require proper estimation of structural reliability, safety and dynamic characteristics. Structural reliability and safety of welded structures such as ships and offshore structures is secured, when the effect of selding and uncertainties caused by sea state and intial imperfections of structures is fully considered. Also, dynamic chracteristics of structures are important because fatigue strength of structures and living environmental conditions are dependent on the dynamic characteristics. To design and construct rational and economic ships and offshore structures reflecting above mentioned problems, we carried out following three research projects.
(1) Evaluation and Control of Welding Deformations and Residual Stresses of Welded Structures by Thermal Elasto-Plastic Analysis
Initial imperfections due to welding reduce the strength of welded structures such as ship hulls and offshore structures. To construct reliable welded structures, techniques to control initial imperfections due to welding and estimate the strength of welded structures with initial imperfections are necessary.
In this research, at first, analysis of heat conduction for welded stiffened plates, cylindrical shells and spherical shells was carried out, using the finite difference method. Also, a thermal elasto-plastic analysis method using the finite element method based on initial strain method was proposed. In this method, at each time step, temperature distribution due to heat input was calculated and equilibrium equations including unbalance force terms was solved by the incremental theory.
Control of time increments was conducted by using discriminant of second order terms of plastic strain increments, which yielded stable solutions. This method was applied to the analysis of residual stresses and bending deformations remaining in welded structures such as thick plates, cylindrical shells and spherical shells.
Calculated results showed good agreements with other analysis methods.
Angles and shapes are most widely used members to construct ship hull structures. However, the kinds of angles and shapes produced by steel companies are limited, so at most ship yards to supply demanded sections built-up beams should be fabricated through welding. For the automation of fabrication of welded built-up beams, more efficient and accurate analysis method to estimate the longitudinal deformations of the beams is necessary. Simplified thermal elasto-plastic analysis method was also proposed in this research to estimate longitudinal deformations due to welding and heating with much efficiency and accuracy. In this proposed method, plastic strains are concentrated only on the inherent strain region and the magnitude of the plastic strains and their extents are calculated from the equilibrium and compatibility conditions, stress-strain relations and initial yielding condition.
Experimental results also confirmed the usefulness of this analysis method. By using this practical analysis method, fabrication process of welded built-up beams can be simulated, and the simulation of the fabrication process will enable appropriate fabrication techniques which can reduce fabrication cost to be developed.
After estimation of initial imperfections, caluculation of ultimate strength of welded structures with initial imperfections are also necessary. A method to calculate the ultimate compressive strength of welded one-sided stiffened plates simply supported along all edges was proposed at later part of this research. To simplify the calculation of the ultimate strength, collapse modes of the stiffened plate are assumed, and collapse loads for each mode are calculated. Among these loads, the lowest value is selected as the ultimate strength of the plate.
The elastic large deflection analysis based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method was carried out, and plastic analysis assuming hinge lines was also carried out. The collapse load was defined as the cross point of the two analysis curves. This method enables the ultimate strength to be calculated with small computing time and a good accuracy. Using the present method, charateristics of stiffener including torsional rigidity, bending and tripping can also be clearified.
(2) Development of probabilistic Structural Analysis Method for Marine Structures based on Reliability Concept.
In this study, Probabilistic Finite Element Method is developed for the rational assessment of the safety of complex structures and is applied to a Midship Section in order to estimate the failure of probability of each element of structure. And the sensitivity analysis is studied to obtain the importance of each element of structures to change of random variables. Then structures are considered as system unit not as element unit and the failure of probability of structural system with systematic failure modes is determined by probabilistic elasto-plastic structural analysis. The sensitivity analysis is carried out to demonstrate the random variable which effects the failure of probability of structural system. Finally, Simulation method is used to obtain the failure of probability of structural system. For this, Response Surface method is used n order to unify several failure modes as one failure mode. Then Importance Sampling method is applied to this one mode for the failure of probability of structural system.
(3) Optimization of structural Dynamic Characteristics of Marine Structures based on the Sensitivity Analysis.
For the structural design of marine structures having dynamic characteristics conformable to international recommendations/regulations such as ISO 6954 etc., structural dynamic optimization methods based on the sensitivity analysis are presented. Considering that marine structures are large in size and complex in arrangements of structural members, and subjected to various dynamic loads such as mechanical and environmental ones, local and the global structure problems are separately formulated; (1) for mulations using transfer matrix method and the combined finite element-transfer matrix method for beam structures and stiffened plastes haveing attached subsystems, (2) formulations using the Rayleigh-Ritz method employing polynomials having the property of Timoshenko beam functions for thick plates and double-wall pannels such as ship's double bottoms, and (3) formulations using the free-interface component-modes synthesis method for global systems. The main features of (4) are that residual inerti a and stiffness effects are taken into account and a frequency shifting technique is in troduced in the formulation of the residual compliance of substructures, and that the approximation technique for the eigenfrequency constraints employs the sensitivities with respect to both design parameters and their reciprocals.
The practical applicability, accuracy and computational efficiency of the developed methods are verified by numerical investigations with appropriate models.
