Perovskite-related materials, which are applicable to new fundtional materials, have been designed and synthesized by using various techniques. Desired properties and chemical compositions could be obtained by controlling reaction conditions, such as temperature, pressure, gas atmosphere, and etc.. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and various analytical tools have been adopted to investigate and to elucidate evolutions of physical properties. Plenty of experiences and human power which will be a firm foundation to further researches have been successfully secured. Variations in crystal and electronic structures, and electromagnetic properties along the nature of elements and the chemical composition have been investigated for nonstoichiometric perovskite compounds. New physical properties induced by the formation of mixed valence state have been observed. Chemical analysis, spectroscopy, electric and magnetic property measurements made it possible to set up the theoretical explanations on those phenomenological facts, and the ability of designing and synthesizing the desired compounds has been obtained. One or two dimensional, anisotropic chalcogenides have been synthesized and their unusual structural, physical properties are studied. By using X-ray diffraction, Synchrotron radiation, and microscopic analysis, the effect of crystal and electronic structures on physical properties have been examined. The new low-dimensional chalcogenides have been synthesized, and the application to porous media and optical materials has been studied. Materials design was performed at various inorganic solid compounds for improving of the electrical properties-dielectric, piezoelectric, magnetic, and thermoelectric. Especially, the characterization of physical properties at morphotropic phase boundary has been carefully made. The variation of dielectric properties along with the substituent and the sintering temperature has been studied for microwave dielectric materials. In magnetic oxides and energy conversion materials, the effect of substituent and short processing time to their properties has been measured. The electrochemical stability and the activity of conducting transition metal oxides applicable to electrocatalysis and electrode substrates have been studied. The superior characteristics of newly-developed materials, including inorganic solids and organometallic compounds, compared to the already-known noble metal catalysts and electrodes have been confirmed. By using spectroelectrochemical techniques, the information of reaction mechanism could be obtained.
