For the formation of the monodispersed silica particles which are valuable for the industrial application by Sol-Gel process, the effects of the parameters participated in the process, the growth mechanism and the characteristics of silica particles for each reaction conditions are investigated. In this study, TEOS (tetraethoxysilane) is chosen as precursor and [NH?], R (H?O/Si molar ratio), temperature and kinds of solvents as process paraeters. According to the kinetics study, the followings were determined that hydrolysis is the rate limiting step and water-forming condensation is the dominant reaction compared with alcohol-forming condensation. From the experimental results of the formation of final silica particles, a constant number of silica particle is formed at early reaction stage, silica particles grow through the aggregation of small particles and nucleation is rate-limiting step for the growth of particles. To confirm the growth of silica particles through the aggregation of smaller particles, Smoluchowski aggregation model based on the colloidal stability theory is applied. From these results, the growth of particles occur through the aggregation of primary particles produces by nucleation. Agregated particles coalesce to form the spherical particle and the aggregated particles above a certain size do not aggregate with each other but aggregate with primary particles, so narrow uniform particle size distribution is abtained. The final particle size increases with the decrease of the primary particle size, because the agregation barrier and stability ratio decrease with the decrease of primary particle size. because the aggregation barrier and stability ratio decrease with the decrease of primary particle size. As a consequence, aggregation is to be an essential step in the formation of silica particles according to the good accordance between predicted and measured mean final particle sizes. The increase of the electrolyte concentration or counter ion number and the decrease of dielectric constant increase the κ(Debye-huckel constant ) and decrease the repulsion portantial. The decrease of the repulsion potantial produce a smaller primary particle and the increase of the electrolyte mobility decrease the primary particle size. Therefor, the properties of reaction mixture have an effect on the primary particle size and the final particle size increase with the decrease of the primary particle size because the aggregation barrier and stability ratio decrease with the decrease of primary particle size.
