이 실험결과로부터 최대도약속도 Vmax(m.sec??)

Maximal locomotor velocity of animals is critical to survival aganist predators' threate in the natural habitat. According to previous studies, maximal velocity is attained by burst locomotion of individuals and is believed to be influenced by such factors as hindlimb length, body mass, and muscle power. Burst locomotor power is anticipated to be a function of anaerobic metabolic capacity of muscle fibers involved in the motion. With take-off responses of anuran amphibians as a model locomotion, this study was proposed to establish the relationship of locomotor velocity to morphology (mass, limb length) and muscle function (contraction, enzyme activity), expecting to explore general principles that allow to find maximal locomotor velocity of animals. To proceed the research goals, three anuran apecies, Rana nigromaculata, R. rugosa and Bombina orientalis were chosen. The two ranid species were believed to take off fast whereas the Bombina were observed to be relatively slow. The maximal velocity, Vmax, was measured with video recordings and analyses, and morphological factors (body mass, hindlimb length, inter-ilial width) which would affect take-off response were measured. Contractile function (force, shortening velocity, power) of the gastrocnemius muscle was examined with isometric and isotonic measurements, and activities of lactate dehydrogenase in the gastrocnemius muscle was measured spectrophotometrically. Results from the study indicate that maximal take-off velocity, Vmax(m.sec??) of R. nigromaculata (2.35±0.17SD, n=14) and R. rugosa (2.33±0.11SD, n=8) was significantly greater that that of the Bombina (1.70±0.12SD, n=8). Body mass (R. nigromaculata, 9.2g±3.3SD ; R. rugosa, 11.5g±5.6SD ; B. orientalis, 6.5g±0.8SD) did not affect take-off velocity within each species. Compared to Bombina, the two ranid species showed longer hindlimb length relative body mass, greater mass of thigh muscle relative to body mass, and a narrower inter-ilial width (at the sacral vertebra) relative to body length. The ranids also exhibited significantly greater rate of force production, shortening velocity, and power of the gastrocnemius muscle than the Bombina. However, the faster ranid species did not show greater force generation and glycolytic capacity than the Bombina, and thus failed to show consistency of the relationship aforementioned. These results demonstrate that faster jumpers have a more effective skelete-muscular system, having relatively longer hindlimbs, dorsoventrically narrower body trunk, and stronger muscle contraction that can generate a faster out-velocity and a greater out-force against gravity. From ecological perspectives, the fact that Bombina, which was less athletic at take-off, are doing well for survival in their habitat indicates that the frogs have some other ways for anti-predation such as toxin secretion, warning coloration and behavior. This study would not only provide basic informations necessary for locomotor physiology but also aid our understanding of prey-predatory interactions seen in the scosystem.
