Black-tailed Gulls coming early to the breeding sites, nest onthe cliffs usually located in the bottom of the islet. Whereas, the gulls coming latenest on the rocky ground located at the top of the islet. The egg-weight(CV: 8.34%)was more variable than either length(CV: 3.47%) or breadth(CV:2.77%). The weight ofthe egg is closely related to its length(r=0.50, p<0.001), but even more so to itsbreadth(r=0.77, p<0.001). However, the egg shape was independent of theegg-weight(r=0.09, NS). The variation in egg weight was greater between than withinclutches: the egg-weight variation between clutches can account for 76.96% of the totalegg-weight variation. However, intra-clutch egg-size variation is also found. Thelast egg was significantly lighter than the remaining eggs in the clutch(p<0.001),indicating that the Black-tailed Gull adopt the "brood-reduction strategy". A significantdifference in the mean fresh egg weight between unhatched(58.38g) and hatchedeggs(60.83g) in a clutch was found(p<0.01). When method 3(from the laying of thelast egg to the hatching of the first chick) was used, the common incubation period was24 or 25 days. Hatching asynchrony occurred(0.5-3.5 days). In the Black-tailed Gull, agonistic behaviour was most commonly observed during the prelaying period in bothsexes. Especially, males spent more time than females in agonistic behaviour, 1.96% ofthe total time budget for females and 3.08% for males. Females of Black-tailed Gullswere more inactive during the prelaying period(72% of the total time budget) thanduring the laying period(43%). In the egg laying period, males spent relatively moretime in foraging, gathering nest materials, and flying than females. Females ofBlack-tailed Gulls spent little time on flying or off territory during the prelaying andlaying periods. This is likely to be related to a energy-conserving tactic for eggproduction. Both sexes incubated and incubation started before clutch completion.Males spent the same proportion of time in incubation as their mates during the layingperiod. However, during the incubation period, females spent more time incubatingthan males(70.92% vs. 15.53%). Courtship feeding in the laying period seemed to benot enough for females to prepare for reproduction in Black-tailed Gulls. The femalewas hardly fed by her mate during the incubation period. Therefore, females may fallinto difficulties from shortage of food in these periods. During the first and middlestages of the rearing period, females left their territories more often than males did. However, both sexes left their territory in the same proportion during the last stage ofrearing. During the early stage of rearing, males fed the chicks more often thanfemales. However, during the middle stage of rearing, females fed the chicks moreoften than males. Whereas, agonistic behaviour was more often found in males thanfemales in this period. Both parents fed the chicks in the same proportion during thelast stage of rearing.
