Evaporation and condensation of working fluid occurs at a surface covered with capillary structures in high-efficiency heat transfer devices such as heat pipes, evaporative cold plates, and capillary pumped loops. The objective of this study is to provide practical engineering data empirically that can be utilized in modeling, performance prediction and design of related devices, by analyzing characteristics of heat transfer through the surface covered with capillary structures. Among various physical factors that influence the heat transfer under the specified condition, heat flux, geometry of the capillary structure, and the inclination of the surface are considered in this study. The effect of these variables are quantitatively analyzed. Ethanol was selected as a working fluid since it is less harmful to human and to the environment and has lower operating temperature range than water. Wire screen meshes were used as the capillary structure. The scope of this study is limited to a normal operation range of a flat heat pipe where no dryout occurs. During the first year, the experimental setup was fabricated and the basic experiment was conducted primarily on coarse mesh numbers. And during the second year of this study, experiments were conducted on higher mesh numbers and higher thermal loads. The experimental setup was a flat heat pipe made of 12-mm thick and 600-mm long copper plate which had a cover of 45 mm in height to secure the vapor passage. The experiment was compared with that from the water only in the case of 80 mesh and 5 degree tilt. The temperatures of the solid, liquid and the vapor in the direction of thickness were measured at 3 locations in the evaporator and the condenser, respectively. The local heat flux was estimated using two or more temperature readings in the plate normal to the surface, and the local heat transfer coefficient was calculated based on the temperature readings from probe thermocouples at the liquid-vapor interface and in the vapor region. The maximum value of the local heat flux was as much as 3 times that of averaged heat flux of 50,000 W/$m^2$. The local heat transfer coefficient was presented as a function of local heat flux, working fluid, mesh number of the screen and the tilt angle of the surface. The measured local heat transfer coefficient exhibit a logarithmic increase. The local heat transfer coefficient ranged $10^2 to 10^5 W/$m^2$-K. A higher heat transfer occurred in the region nearer to the adiabatic section and condenser, respectively. The experimental data in the condenser region exhibited more clear and co-linear trends.
