Due to the rapid increase of the import and export throughputpassing through Masan harbour, the size of the ships entering into the harbour has beenincreasing from 20,000 - 30,000 tons to 50,000 tonnage Car Carrier. Nevertheless, thewidth, depth and alignment of the entrance channels of the harbour are still the same asbefore, which is hampering the safety of the navigation through the channels. In orderto reduce the danger to the ship using the harbour, it is necessary to find out a way toimprove the safety of the navigational channels of the harbour. In this respect, the researcher carried out a study to redesign entrance channels ofthe harbour, and to find out other measures to enhance ships' navigational safety in theharbour. In this research, through the on-scene investigation of the harbour, navigational environment such as current and wind together with the geography of theharbour were surveyed and these informations were used as the basic data for thechannel improvement. In addition, various issues related to the navigational safety ofthe channels were investigated through the interview with the pilots. After the surveywas completed, the widths, depths and alignments of the channels were compared withthose of the international guidelines on the harbour and waterway design. It has beenfound, from the survey and comparison, that the depth of the Budo-Sudo channel is notdeep enough to cater for the largest vessel visiting the harbour, and that the No. 2navigational channel is not wide enough for the vessel. An additional new waterway, therefore, has been recommended to be established in the south of the Budo-Sudochannel so that the deep draft vessel can detour. The No. 2 navigational channel hasbeen recommended to be widen to 280 meters. A waterway design simulationmethodology has been applied to examine the safety of the newly suggested channels.New channels have been proved to be safe from the simulation experiment. It is believed that the safety of the navigation at Masan harbour will besignificantly improved in case the navigational channels of the harbour are improved aswas suggested in this paper.
