We have carried out ab initio calculation of excess electron inwater hexamer, water dodecamer and bezene-water cluster and compared the resultswith the experimental data. The excess electrons bound to various structures of the water dodecamer havebeen studied for the first time with ab initio theory including MP2 calculatioins. Weexplored a number of possible low-lying energy conformers including surface, internal, and partially internal excess-electron states as well as unbounded excess-electron states. Then we investigated their relative stabilities and predicted ther vertical detachmentenergies(VDEs). The lowest energy structure is the partially iinternal excess-electronstate, followed by a surface state another partially internal state and an internalexcess-electron state. The VDEs of thes conformers are good agreement with theexperimental value. Therefore, the prediected structural stability as well as thepredicted VDEs indicate that in the experiments the partially internal excess-electronstate structure would have been detected. We have also predicted the lowest-lying energy conformers which are in excellentagreement with experimental VDEs and OH stretching frequencies, and thir relativeintensities. We find that the conformational energetics of these small water clustersare governed by several competing forces: hydrogen bonds, strains, e…dipoleinteractions, quantum effects due to free volume size for the electron confinement, andexchange repulsions between excess electron and valence electrons. The lowest-lyingenergy conformers are partially internal and partially surface states with highly clusterdH's along with large dipole moments. In the benzene-water cluster, a quantum probabilistic interpretation was give forthe structure of the cluster based on this porential surface. The quantum mechanicalexpectation value of RCM-CM is 3.347Å, in good agreement with the experimentalvalue (3.347±0.005Å). For the average rotational constant, the expectation value is1990MHz, in good agreement with experiment (1995MHz). The ground state energy is10cm-1 lower thatn the C2v conformer energy, resulting in the most probable D0 to be2.74±0.68kcal/mol, which favor the experimental upper bound (1.63-2.67 kcal/mol).This large binding energy [in which the electron correlation is the most important, followed by the dipole(water)-quadrupole(benzene) interaction] explains why the eπ-Hinteraction is able to play an important role in biomolecular systems.
