IV.

Results and suggestions 1. Hydrography and currents in the Ulleung Basin Long-term hydrographic and current data are analyzed to investigate the spatial and temporal structure of the Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW). The KSBCW is newly defined in this study as a water mass below the maximum vertical gradient of temperature in the permanent thermocline. Based on the definition the seasonal distribution, the appearance rate, and the volume of the KSBCW are estimated. The KSBCW extends to south towards the western channel of the Korea Strait from an area off Ulgi and shows the seasonal variation in its appearance rate in the Korea Strait, a minimum in April and maximim in August. It is confined north of 35°N in April, and extends to the north of Tsushima Island hugging the Korean coast in June. It appears in the southern Tsushima Island in August when its appearance rate shows an annual maximum, and the wide distribution of the KSBCW in the Korea Strait persists until October. The appearance rate becomes reduced in December, and it is hardly found in the deep trough west of Tsushima island in February. The annual mean volume of the KSBCW had been increased during 1992 ~ 1998 as compared to that during 1987 ~ 1991, which appears to be associated with the variation of the North Korean Cold Water mass flowing southward along the eastern coast of Korea. Hydrography and circulation in the upper layer of the Ulleung Basin are mainly influenced by the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) and an anticyclonic warm eddy that is associated with the separation of the EKWC from the coast. The northward flowing narrow EKWC hugged the eastern coast of Korea and formed the warm eddy west of Ulleungdo in April 2001, while it formed a broader northward flowing current off the coast with the warm eddy formed north of Ulleungdo. The Tsushima Warm Current Water that feeds the EKWC water occupies the whole section cross the western half of the Korea Strait, and the KSBCM occupies a shallow bottom layer close to the Korean coast in April. Seasonal thermocline and harocline are formed in October and the Tsushima Current surface water occupies the upper mixed layer of 40 ~ 70 m deep. The Tsushima Current middle water that is characterized by a core of high salinity occurs below the seasonal thermocline offshore of a section across the western half of the Korea Strait. The thicker KSBCW than in April appears close to the Korean coast near the seabed also in October. A salinity conversion layer was observed below the seasonal thermocline in the Korea Strait in October. A long meridional section in April shows the existence of the warm eddy that is about 150 km wide and about 170 m thick in the center of the eddy. A newly-supplied warm and saltier water is found at the southern and northern peripheries of the eddy, and the East Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW) having salinity less than 34.06 psu is found below the warm eddy. The same long meridional section in October shows the formation of the seasonal thermocline and harocline at around 60 m depth, and a homogeneous layer with a high salinity core (S > 34.3 psu) is found below the harocline. A fresh ESIW with salinity less than 34.0 psu was found on a zonal section along 38.5°N in April, but it disappeared in October on the same section. The chlorophyll concentration was high inside the warm eddy ranging 1.0~2.5 ㎍/ℓon the meridional section across the warm eddy in April, but was lower than 0.5 ㎍/ℓin October on the same section but followed the northward flowing EKWC. The subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer is found at about 30 m depth inside the eddy in April, and a deeper SCM layer is found north of the eddy between 30~70 m depth. Southwestward flows in the Ulleung Interplain Gap (UIG) between Ulleung and Tokdo and a strong southward western boundary undercurrent off the eastern coast of Korea on the continental slope characterize the long-term deep mean flows in the Ulleung basin. Although the mean abyssal flows are weak in the central and southern Ulleung Basin with high temporal variability, the overall mean circulation appears to be cyclonic in the abyssal layer in the Ulleung Basin opposite to the dominant anticyclonic circulation in the upper layer. Seasonal variation of deep flows are not obvious, while the mesoscale variability with period of 15~40 days is dominant in the observed fluctuations. Fluctuations at three depths below 400 m are mainly barotropic in the UIG with characteristics of stronger mean flow and larger temporal variation near the seabed as compared to the flows above. The current fluctuations appear to be related with temperature fluctuations at 400 m depth that seems to be associated with the movement of the warm eddy in the upper layer. More detailed analysis is required to figure out the relationship between the movement of the warm eddy and the current fluctuations. A warming trend in deep water temperature is found in the Ulleung basin in full-depth CTD data sets that has been compiled since 1996. The warming rate is approximately 0.005℃/year which is larger than those rates reported in other basins in the East Sea. The temperature variation in the UIG, that serves as a conduit of deep waters between Japan and Ulleung basins, is smaller than the variation inside the basin, suggestive of the local downward diffusion of heat more important than the advection of heat through the UIG. Vertical diffusivity is estimated to be 60×10-4 m2/s using long-term current data in the UIG and all available CTD data in the Ulleung Basin, that is an order of magnitude greater than the value in other deep basins in the ocean. 2. Biogeochemical processes Average downward total mass flux in the East Sea estimated from the recent experiments of sediment trap mooring was higher than 0.30 g/m2/day at least. This flux is two or three times greater than the sinking particle fluxes of the Okhotsk Sea and the Bering Sea, the marginal sea of the Northwest Pacific. Organic carbon fluxes related to the signal of primary productivity showed a high time and spatial variation. There was not the signal of spring bloom in the Japan Basin, 1995. In the southern part of the East Sea, spring bloom has been started in February. Even the East Sea is known as oligotrophic ocean in summer, organic carbon flux to be comparable to that in spring has been observed. This may result from the effect of eddy, however, partly there may be the contribution of the N-fixation by micro organism. Average mole ratio of biogenic silica and particulate nitrogen decomposed between 1020 m and 2100 m during one year was 4.5 : 1. This value is higher than mole ratio of silicate and nitrate in deep water of the East Sea. This implies that ratio of silicate and nitrate in deep water is increasing. The distributions of nutrients respond to the characteristics of distribution of water temperature. The ratio of nitrate/phosphate was lower than 10 and particulate organic carbon and nitrogen contents were relatively high in surface water near the Hupo Bank in April. This indicates that nitrate was being depleted by the spring bloom of phytoplankton. And nitrate/silicate ratio in this area was higher than that in other areas. This suggests that silicate is firstly consumed in spring bloom. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen in surface mixed layer was depleted in some area and showed maximum 2 μmole/l in other area in April 2001. This is close to the half of the concentration of 4 ~ 6 μmole/l in surface layer of winter. Maximum concentration of particulate nitrogen was 4.65 μmole/l in April. 3. Ecological responses Of CZCS pigment data, during Nov '78 through Dec '86, April, July, and October data of '79 through '84 for the East Sea have been analyzed. Spring blooms were observed in April data with variability of timing. Also spatial variability was evident. There were three patterns of spatial distribution of pigments. Firstly, n 1980, spring blooms were observed in the Japanese coastal region south to the 37N. Secondly, in 1981, high chlorophyll concentration was observed in large area in the central region and Korean coastal region of the East Sea. Third pattern was the case of 1983, when blooms were observed in meridional direction along the Korean Peninsula west to 134E. Typically, no blooms were observed in July due to the stratification, the pigment concentration usually being less than 0.5 mg m-3. However, in July of 1981, blooms were observed in rather large parts of the East Sea. In October, there were blooms in 1979, 1981, and 1984, while in other years, blooms were observed in November. Using CZCS pigment, SST, and solar radiation data, primary production has been calculated for all the data during the period of 1978 through 1986. Analysis has been focused on April and October data in reference to spring and autumn blooms. Also July data were compared. Histograms of primary production values were analysed. As was mentioned in pigment patterns, three patterns were also evident in the primary production. Firstly, in 1980 and 1982, primary production was higher in Japanese coastal region south to 37N with typical values about 1,200 mg C m-2 d-1. Second pattern was the case of 1980. when high primary production was observed all over the East Sea, altlough overestimation might have resulted from the Yellow Sand contamination. Lastly, the third pattern was the case of 1983, area of high production was present along the Korean Peninsula in meridional direction. The production level was about 1,000 mg C m-2 d-1. The mode value of primary production in July was about 600 mg C m-2 d-1. There were large year-to-year variability in the primary production in October. The ecological investigation of phytoplankton showed distinctly different characteristics between two surveys conducted in November 2000 and April 2001. Firstly, the distribution of picoplankton abundances exhibited well-defined changes in taxa groups between the two seasons i.e., summer and winter. The average cell abundance for Synechococcus was 2.4x 1012cells/m2 in November, however, in April, its average cell abundance showed a decreased concentration of 6.2x1011cells/m2. An opposite trend was observed for picoeukaryotes where the average April abundance (2.0x1012 cells/m2) was higher than November (3.3 x 1011cells/m2). On the other hand, there were no observable Prochlorococcus cell in April in the sampling stations of the East Sea. The picoplankton contribution to total primary production was higher in November comprising 52.0% of total chlorophyll-a and 54.4% of primary production. However, with biomass increase in nano + netplankton in April, the contribution of picoplankton to the total chlorophyll-a and primary production was decreased to 35.9% and 33.3%, respectively. Also, in April, the averaged chlorophyll-a concentration for all stations was 75.5 mg m-2 which showed a drastic increase from the November concentration of 22.1 mg m-2. In general, phytoplankton abundance analyses showed that autotrophic flagellate, coccolithophore and diatom communities notably increased in cell numbers in April compared to November samples. Particularly, the analyses showed that autotrophic flagellates played an important role in the April increase of phytoplankton abundance. In April, high diatom cell abundances were observed in the northern part of the sea where prominent thermoclines were formed whereas high abundance of autotrophic flagellates were observed along the areas of weak thermocline. Also, higher abundance (3.5x1010cells m-2) of autotrophic flagellates was observed when compared to diatom (1.2 x109cells m-2). Coccolithophores also showed a similar trend of higher abundance in April than November. The species composition and abundance of zooplankton were studied in the East Sea in April and Octover, 2001. Among dominant taxa of the zooplankton community, copepods were predominant in both seasons. They contributed up to 70% of the total zooplankton abundance. In the copepod community, Clausocalanus sp. (21.7%) and Paracalanus indicus (17.8%) were dominant in April; Paracalanus indicus (16.6%) and Oncaea spp. (12.3%) in October, 2001. The individual numbers range from 560 ~ 5,036 ind. m-3 in April and 129 ~ 645 ind. m-3 in October. Investigation on the larval fish assemblage was conducted in the East Sea in November 2000 and October 2001. The sampling gear was the bongo net in November 2000 and IKMT (Isaacs-Kidd mid-water trawl) net in October 2000. In November 2000 survey, the total of 46 species of fish larvae were found in the study area. Among them Maurolicus muelleri was the most dominant species comprising 69.1% of the total larvae, followed by Engraulis japonicus with 7.3%, Champsodon snyderi with 2.6%, Pseudolabrus japonicus with 1.6%, Parapercies sexfasciatus with 1.6%, Gobiidae spp. with 1.2%, Ophichthidae spp. with 1.2%, Spinapsaron spp. with 1.2% and the other rare species comprising of less than 1.0%, respectively. The most of fish larvae except for M. muelleri were the warm water species. In October 2001 survey, a total of 72 species of fish larvae were found in the study area. Among them Engraulis japonicus was the most dominant species comprising 56.3% of the total larvae, followed by Benthosema pterotum with 7.8%, Gobiidae spp. with 4.8%, Pseudolabrus japonicus with 2.8%, Ophichthinae sp. with 2.2%, Synagrops philippinensis with 1.3%, Trachurus japonicus with 1.2%, Acanthaphritis uroorum with 1.1%, Scorpaenidae spp. with 1.1%, Sacura marugaritacea with 1.1%, Neobythites sivicola with 1.1%, Chromis notatus with 1.0%, Repomucenus sp. with 1.0% and the other rare species comprising of less than 1.0%, respectively. The most of fish larvae were the warm water species. There was a significant positive correlation between the number of species and biomass of the fish larvae and the mean temperature of the mixed layer of the surface in the survey area in November 2000 and October 2001. V. Suggestions for Applications The scientific results of the project is expected to have short- and long-term effects on some of the important societal and practical problems such as the management of the sustainability of the fisheries resources and pollution and waste materials, preparation of future climate change, and accurate operational ocean forecasting services through data/model inter-comparisons using quantitative data sets acquired throughout the project. Analysis of long-term data compiled and survey data conducted in the Korea Strait and Ulleung Basin shows an interannual variability of the Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water, a warming trend of deep water in the Ulleung Basin, and various scales of variability in hydrography and currents hermal structure, which is expected directly or indirectly associated with the variability of the ecosystem. Hence, the results of the analysis will be useful in understanding the reported changes in fisheries resources, and the prediction of future changes due to climate variability. The result of sediment trap experiment during recent several years showed that the downward particle flux in the interior of the East Sea was two to three times higher than the sinking particle fluxes in the interior of the Okhotsk Sea and the Bering Sea. Organic carbon fluxes in summer were even comparable to those in spring. And the sinking particulate organic carbon in summer was decomposed more rapidly than in other season. It is necessary to understand the factors that enhance organic carbon flux in summer. It is required to quantify the contribution of N-fixation using the method of isotope analysis. The mole ratio of biogenic silica and particulate nitrogen decomposed between 1020 m and 2100 m was higher than the ratio of silicate to nitrate in deep water. This implies that stoichiometry of biogenic components may be changed in water column. Related causes and scopes should be identified. A large year-to-year variability in the primary production was observed in 1979 through 1985. To explain this variability, chlorophyll, SST, solar radiation data were analyzed. Only chlorophyll appears to be directly related to the variability in the primary production. There were also changes in the spatial patterns every year, which seem related to physical forcing. The direction and strength of the Tsushima current as it enters into the East seem the primary factors by forming local fronts and eddies and changing mixing characteristics. The long term change in primary productivity and its ecological consequences in large scale should further be studied. Thus far, the ecological analyses of phytoplankton mainly concentrated on understanding its relationship to seasonal changes in physical environment. In the coming third phase of the study, changes in phytoplankton ecology by meso-scale marine environment created by warm eddies will also be investigated in relation with physical forcing. The abundance of subtropical species of fish larvae seems to illuminate the influence of the Tsushima current. Therefore the study requires more intensive survey and apprehension of physical forcing. Engraulis japonicus and Maurolicus muelleri were the dominant species in the survey area. The most of fish larvae except for the mid-water species M. muelleri was the warm water species that could be transported by the East Korean Warm Current. It appears that the larval fish assemblage in the East Sea was largely dependent upon the structure of the water masses.
