II.

Synthesis and Characterization of Inorganic Aerogels
II. Objective and Importance
An aerogel is a type of open-cell solid foam with high surface areas and nano-scale pore and cell sizes, prepared by sol-gel reactions and processed by drying the gel under supercritical conditions to avoid collapse of the cell structure due to surface tension. As implied by the name, aerogel is mostly air. It is the lightest existing solid material, and it can have a surface area as high as 1000 m2/g and density as low as 10 kg/m3. Aerogel is one of the few existing materials that is both transparent and porous. It can be formed into almost any useful shape. The unique microstructures result in the lowest thermal conductivity ever measured, making aerogels the world's best insulators. Aerogels are also good acoustic insulators and have low dielectric constants. Additional applications include catalysts and catalyst supports, gas filters and gas storage materials, chemical sensors, and high-speed electronic conductor substrates. In a recent issue of Science, aerogels were rated among the top ten scientific and technological developments. As a result of extensive work over the past decade by an international community of researchers, aerogels are beginning to prove their commercial potential.
The objective of this research project is to develop advanced synthesis technique for making inorganic aerogels to fit specific applications. The detailed objectives are to control morphological, structural, and textural properties of inorganic aerogels such as transition metal oxides, alumina, and silica.

b. Effect of sol-gel parameters on the properties of inorganic aerogels
c. Development of a novel alumina sol-gel process
d. Application of alumina-based aerogels in catalysis
e. Preparation and characterization of monolithic silica-based aerogels
IV. Results
Titania, zirconia, and niobia, alumina, and silica aerogels were prepared by the sol-gel synthesis of metal alkoxides in alcohol solvent and the subsequent removal of solvent with supercritical carbon dioxide. The inorganic aerogels were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, thermal analysis, and XRD. In particular, effect of various sol-gel parameters on textural and structural properties on the aerogels was studied systematically. The resulting aerogels had high surface area and well-developed porous structure with pronounced mesoporosity.
A novel "fast sol-gel synthetic route" for preparing alumina aerogels was developed and extended to prepare nickel-alumina composite aerogels. The nickel phase was uniformly distributed in the alumina gel network from transparent monolithic nickel-alumina co-gels by using nickel acetate as a metal precursor. Alumina aerogel-based nickel catalyst exhibited good activity and marked stability against coking in carbon dioxide reforming.
Silica and silica-titania composite aerogels were prepared in powder and monolithic form by the sol-gel process under acidic and basic conditions followed by carbon dioxide or alcohol supercritical drying. The homogeneity of silica-titania composite aerogels could be improved by prehydrolysis of silica precursor or complexation of titania precursor with acetylacetone for a better match in different precursor reactivity.
V. Recommendations
So far the commercial market for aerogels remains very small. However, aerogels have the potential of being marketable both as a commodity chemical and as a specialty chemical because of their unique and tailorable properties. Continuing research on composite aerogels prepared by co-gels, doping, and impregnation can extend the boundaries of potential applications. The future works should focus on possible applications and more economic production routes.
