The development of Fiber Bragg Grating technology
Ⅱ. Research Objectives
At present, the researches on the optical WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) communication are performed actively in the United States, Great Britain and Japan. The basic conception of the WDM communication is to transmit multi-wavelength signals in a single fiber, and demultiplex them by signal processing technology. A fiber Bragg grating(FBG) has many good characteristics as a WDM communication component, and it can be applied to real optical communication systems with very high possibility. The subjects of this research are as follows : 1) we designed and analyzed FBG's, 2) we made a phase mask by collaborating with Glasgow University, our mutual international co-laboration 3) we used manufactured phase mask to fabricate FBG's, and 4) we developed a optical component which can be applied to WDM communication system using FBG's.
Ⅲ. Contents and scope of research and development
1. Analysis and design of fiber Bragg grating
Techniques of fiber Bragg grating analysis and design are necessary to fabricate a specific fiber Bragg grating. In this work, we theoretically analyzed and designed a short period grating by using the coupled mode theory.
2. Fabrication of a phase mask
There are several methods in fabrication of fiber Bragg grating. Among these methods, the phase mask method is the simpler technique than other methods. Using this technique, we are able to imprint high quality fiber Bragg gratings. In this work, the phase mask was fabricated by utilizing an e-beam lithography method in Glasgow University, which has mutual international collaboration with us. By using this phase mask, we fabricated fiber Bragg grating using a 248㎚ coherent ultraviolet KrF excimer pulse laser.
3. Fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings
Fiber Bragg gratings provide us with superior characteristics to the conventional devices, such as low insert loss, independent polarization, compactness, high wavelength selectivity and tunability. Because they can be directly written into the fiber core, in-fiber gratings are outstanding devices in WDM optical fiber communication systems. In this work, we fabricated fiber Bragg gratings for WDM optical communication systems using the phase mask, which was fabricated by Glasgow University, and excimer pulse laser. Also, the new experimental set-up was established for efficient fiber Bragg grating fabrications.
4. Application of fiber Bragg grating for WDM
There are several developments in this work for WDM application of fiber Bragg gratings. Firstly, we developed bandwidth controllable filter by using a tilted chirped fiber grating as the passive device. Also, we developed that a transmission filter with the segmented chirped fiber Bragg grating that can select any wavelength channel of an input WDM signal by independent channel-switching. Therefore, these devices can be utilized as important devices for practical WDM optical communication systems.
Ⅳ. Research Results
1. Fiber Bragg grating analysis and design
Many techniques have been proposed for fiber Bragg grating analysis and design. Among these techniques, we analyzed and designed fiber Bragg gratings which have any other index profiles using the coupled mode theory. We solved Maxwell's equations and analyzed the equations by using the coupled mode theory. Analyzed equations can be applied to uniform, nonuniform, tilted, chirped, and phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating. There is high requirement to analyze structures of fiber Bragg gratings by using the coupled mode theory. Also, Lattice filter model is analyzed by using backward reflection coupled mode in fiber Bragg gratings. In this work, We researched structures and properties of the fiber Bragg gratings by using the coupled mode theory.
2. Fabrication of a phase mask
There are two methods in fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings. Firstly, there is interferometric fabrication technique, which is external writing approach for inscribing Bragg gratings in photosensitive fibers. An interferometer splits the incoming UV light into two beams, and subsequently recombines splitted two beams to form an interference pattern of side-exposed a photosensitive fiber, inducing a permanent refractive index modulation in the core. Secondly, a phase mask, Diffractive Optical Element (DOE), when illuminated by incident light uses the beam splitting properties of a phase grating to divide the incident light into the various diffraction orders. Phase mask used to generate the pattern of the interferometric structure. and used for inscribing Bragg grating in optical fibers. In this work, we fabricated fiber Bragg gratings by using the latter method. Fiber Bragg gratings that are fabricated by using phase mask method has superior properties compared to others. The phase mask method is simpler than other method, and massively produced. The phase mask itself is a grating that generates the pattern of the structure formed by reactive ion etching (RIE). The amplitude of the surface relief grating is chosen so that when the UV beam is normally incident on the phase mask, the zero order diffracted beam is suppressed to less than 3% of the transmitted power and the diffracted plus and minus first orders are maximized to each contain more than 35% of the transmitted power, while the rest is lost to reflection from the substrate surfaces and diffraction into higher orders.
There are a holographic method and an electron-beam lithography method in the fabrication of phase mask. Phase mask used in this study is fabricated by an electron-beam lithography method in Glasgow University. The fabrication process of the phase mask is the same as follows: At first, a Cr thin film is placed on the silica wafer for UV beam, and the photoresist material for UV beam is plasced on that. After this process, a phase mask pattern is delineated during the e-beam exposure. Another pattern on phase mask is formed by moving the translator, which has a silica wafer on it. As the mutually-connected pattern is fabricated by the same method, long phase mask can be made. As compared with a holographic method, the e-beam lithography has a profit that e-beam lithography can produce massively and make a complex mask pattern for phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating, moire grating and so on. After the e-beam lithography process, the photoresist material is removed selectively. During a RIE etching, the etching depth of silica wafer for UV beam is achieved at the proper depth for use at an UV wavelength of 248㎚. By removing the remained Cr thin film, a phase mask is made.
The phase mask of this research for the fabrication of fiber Bragg grating is made with the e-beam lithography machine of Glasgow university, co-research organ. the patterns of two produced phase mask are 50㎜ and 100㎜-length, 1060㎚-period on the silica wafer for UV beam with 120㎜-length and 2㎜-thickness. At the property of phase mask measured with a Ar-ion laser, 0th-order diffraction is below 3%.
3. Fabrication of fiber Bragg grating
In this research, fiber Bragg grating is made with the manufactured phase mask and a 248-㎚ excimer laser, which is a pulse laser. A pattern of phase mask is transmitted by focusing the beam of excimer laser with cylindrical lense, and is diffracted by it. The diffracted beam by a phase mask makes the interference pattern that organizes gratings in the core of a photosensitive fiber.
Hydrogen-loaded optical fibers and photosensitive fibers for the fiber Bragg gratings are used. The first one are soaked in hydrogen gas at temperature of 100℃ and pressure of 100 atm for 48 hours. During the organization of fiber Bragg grating, the transmissive property of that is observed with an optical sources and an optical spectrum analyzer
4. Application of fiber Bragg grating on Wavelengh Divison Multiplexers
The bandwidth controllable filter by using a tilted-chirped fiber Bragg grating as a passive device, and the transmission filter by using a segmented chirped fiber Bragg grating as an optical channel-switch device are proposed and experimentally demonstrated.
At first, a bandwidth controllable filter uses the tilted chirped fiber Bragg grating that is made to incline the standard chirped fiber grating. The tilted chirped fiber grating used at this experiment is produced with a hydrogen-loaded, step-index single mode fiber, and phase mask. Its characteristics of are 5㎝-length, 1°-tilted angle and the 99.7%-reflectivity. The characteristic of a tilted chirped fiber grating is that the short wavelength band of a chirped grating is disappeared in case that a source is inserted to the long wavelength part of a chirped grating by radiating cladding modes. In case of an experimental fiber, the wavelength of ghost mode is 1.6㎚ shorter than the Bragg wavelength of core mode. By using this characteristic, the bandwidth of the filter is controlled by stretching the short wavelength part of the tilted chirped grating. The tuning range of the filter is about 2㎚. The characteristic of stretcher driven by a piezo-electric device is 0.27㎚/10V.
Because this experiment is approximately square shape, a bandwidth controllable filter successfully selects the 0.8㎚-separated optical communication signal. For the performance measurement of this filter, 5-channel optical source is utilized. The wavelength of optical source are 1553.79㎚, 1554.60㎚, 1555.41㎚, 1556.21㎚, and 1557.01㎚. The crosstalk component between adjacent channels is suppressed under 25㏈ and the bandwidth flattening below 0.5㏈ is obtained under the band width of 2.7㎚. At second, optical channel-switching transmission filter uses a segmented chirped fiber Bragg grating made at a partial area. So, a channel-switching filter has a multi-transmission region at whole bandwidth of chirped fiber grating. Also, each channel of that is switched independently. The fiber grating used at proposed filter is made with a phase mask to a standard optical communication fiber. Slots for protecting an excimer laser beam is used to make the transmission regions in the 3.2㎚-bandwidth of the whole reflection. The number of reflection peaks from one to four are turned out in whole reflection region as the position of slots and the proper reflectivity of peaks are acquired to put the slots on a phase mask delicately. The spectrum of a segmented chirped fiber grating is the same as the collected spectrum of short-period fiber Bragg gratings. Since a segmented chirped fiber grating is produced easily and apt to control the interval of the transmission regions optionally as compared with general fiber gratings by using the exact phase mask, this is suitable to Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing(DWDM). the experimental fiber grating has three peaks at intervals of 1-㎝ in the 5㎝-length chirped fiber grating. The length of peaks is about 0.3-0.4㎝ and the positions of peaks are 0.3-0.6㎝, 1.7-2㎝, 3-3.4㎝ and 4.4-4.7㎝. This is a transmission filter with the segmented chirped fiber Bragg grating which can select any wavelength channel of an input WDM signal by independent channel-switching. It can perform the channel selection by controlling the three or four piezoelectric transducers attached to segmented chirped fiber Bragg grating. It can tune any channel of input signals independently while channel switching does not affect other channels. The proposed filter is a fiber Bragg grating based WDM component. The insertion loss is very small and has little polarization dependence. The channel separation is very accurate and the channel crosstalk is < 20㏈ at the output port. Switching time of PZT is less than 1㎳.
Ⅴ. Application of research results
1. Design of fiber gratings
We could design several kinds of fiber gratings, i.e. a uniform grating, a nonuniform grating, a tilted grating, a chirped grating, a phase-shifted grating, and a grating which has an arbitrary index profile proposed lattice filter model. Transmission and reflection spectrum obtained from our lattice model were compared to measured spectrum of fabricated gratings and have shown great similarities. We could see that our lattice model could be applied to design the fiber gratings.
2. Fabrication of a phase mask
We could make a phase mask by collaborating with Glasgow university, and obtained desired results. It is required for further researches to develop fabrication technology of a phase mask.
3. Fabrication and application of fiber Bragg gratings
In this work, we fabricated fiber Bragg gratings with the phase mask and the ultraviolet 248 nm pulse laser. Fiber Bragg gratings provide us with superior characteristics to the conventional devices, such as low insert loss, independent polarization, compactness, high wavelength selectivity, and tunability. Because they can be directly written onto the fiber core, in-fiber gratings are outstanding devices in WDM optical fiber communication systems. Therefore, fiber Bragg gratings will be used at ADM(Add Drop Multiplexing), OXC(Optical Cross Connector), wavelength selective filter, dispersion compensation device by using chirped fiber gratings and fiber grating sensor.
