SUMMARY
Ⅰ. Title
Development of hydrogen storage technologies using carbon-based materials
Ⅱ. Objectives and Necessity
Hydrogen energy is a good alternative for fossil fuels in view of environmental consideration and high efficient utilization. However, for application to automotive vehicles, it is essential to develop the suitable media of hydrogen having high gravimetric density. The objectives of this study are to develop hydrogen storage technologies using carbon-based material, because that carbon based materials have good properties such as chemical stability, heat and electrical conductivity and mechanical properties. In this regarding, carbon based materials are powerful candidate for hydrogen storage media and will overcome the drawback of hydrogen storage media such as metal hydride and liquid hydrogen. Actually many studies on carbon materials such as activated carbon, mesoporous carbon, and fibrous carbon have been investigated on hydrogen adsorption. While this results showed no conspicuous interest, recent reports like carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and graphite nanofibers(GNFs) that were as high adsorption of hydrogen attract attention. These results showed not only excess of the DOE goals but also advantage of utilization with ease for transportation engine. Unfortunately, these remarkable findings have not been guaranteed. The widely variable adsorption properties on carbon based materials (0.2wt% ∼ 68wt%) were presented. The reasons of this diversity are assumed that the carbon materials have different structure and physical and chemical properties, in addition the mechanism of hydrogen adsorption to carbon has not yet been found.
So, it is needed to find the mechanism of hydrogen adsorption and to control physical and chemical properties of hydrogen-based material in order to use carbon-based material as hydrogen storage media.
III. Contents and Scope
In this year, we concentrated to the manufacturing methods of carbon based material in order to improve the ability of hydrogen storage. Various carbon based materials such as carbon nanotube, nanofiber, non-crystalline carbon and conducting polymers were used to investigate the hydrogen adsorption property. The crystallinity and morphology were investigated by XRD, SEM, and TEM. Hydrogen uptake capacity was measured by a Sieverts apparatus at ambient temperature and above 100 bar. BET data was added to characterize the physical properties on the carbon materials.
IV. Results
1) Carbon nanofibers were synthesized by catalytic decomposition of methane using Ni based catalysts such as NiMgO, Ni/Zolite and LaNi5, and hydrogen adsorption experiments were carried out by a Sieverts apparatus under 120 bar at 25℃. Hydrogen adsorption capacity was elevated up to 1.4 wt% after heat treatment at 1200℃ in N2 atmosphere. The CO and CO2 were detected by gas chromatography during heat treatment which promoted active surface suitable for hydrogen adsorption of carbon nanofibers. HRTEM and XRD analysis revealed that the structure of carbon nanofibers was durable after hydrogen uptake even at high pressures. Non-crystalline carbon showed the hydrogen adsorption less than 1wt%.
2) Hydrogen sorption in conducting polymers has been investigated to explore a new possible hydrogen storage media. The conducting polymers, polyaniline and polypyrrole treated with an acid showed an exceptionally high hydrogen sorption, 9 and 12 wt% at room temperature and under 9.3 MPa. Both molecular sieve effect and electrical effect by conducting polymers seem to play an important role in hydrogen sorption. In this work, we presented the preliminary results of hydrogen sorption in conducting polymer and the characterization by XRD, scanning electron microscopy, TGA, N2 BET method and the conductivity measurement using four probe method. Also, the possible mechanism for extraordinary high hydrogen storage was suggested based on the characterization results.
Ⅴ. Application Plan
Throughout the first-year study, it was identified that the hydrogen sorption characteristics of the crystalline carbon nanotubes were much better than those of non-crystalline carbon materials, increasing hydrogen storage capability by surface modifications. In particular, the conducting polymer carbon materials displayed the possibility to attain the DOE target value for hydrogen storage capability. It was also identified that the porous carbon replica could be developed for an effective storage of hydrogen.
The Research and Development works to develop new carbon materials available for mass production will be also continued in the second-year study, and by finding out a theoretical hydrogen storage mechanism to solve the increased hydrogen storage capability, the potential of the carbon-based materials for hydrogen storage would be able to be settled. The Research and Development area expected for the hydrogen storage using carbon-based materials is as follows
[1] to produce crystalline carbon materials in a large scale and to develop high-purity refining technologies
[2] to find out the structures and conditions beneficial to hydrogen storage of carbon-based materials
[3] to find out hydrogen storage mechanism and its occurrence locations
[4] to improve hydrogen storage capability by means of treatment-after-treatment method, etc.
[5] to study the change in the characteristics of carbon nanotubes during or after the hydrogen storage process
[6] to conduct physico-chemical study on the hydrogen sorption/desorption properties of conducting polymers
[7] to study th synthetic method and characteristics of conducting polymers.
If these technologies could be equipped with reproducibility and stability, the possibility of carbon-based materials as an effective hydrogen storage material would be soundly proved.
