Development of high sensitivity measurements system under multi-extreme conditions
Ⅱ. Objective and importance
From new material studies to large scale Tokamak research, generation of multi-extreme condition is a basic key technology. Researches on quantum behaviour under multi-extreme conditions have prevailed since 80's, and 4 specific topics of which were already awarded Novel prize. These achievements find their applications in industry such as micro-electronics business and emerging nano-technology.
To meet those need, we aim to develop instruments generating multi-extreme conditions, high sensitivity measurement systems under multi-extreme conditions and new measurement methods for specialized and intensified research areas. The objective of this R&D project is to establish our capacity up to world-class National User's Facility and serve as a technology center satisfying the demand of scientists for materials research under extreme physical conditions.
Ⅲ. Scope and contents
To establish multi-extreme condition generation technique, 2 GPa hydrostatic pressure cell for electric-transport measurement, made of Maraging 300 steel were developed together with pressure cell for magnetic property measurement using BeCu and MP35N alloy. Developed cells were integrated into high-field and low-temperature environment such as 20 Tesla superconducting magnet system and SQUID system. In the field of high precision material property measurements, we strategically pursued focused specific development of thermal property measurement systems and established multi-faceted magnetic property measuring system. By providing state-of-the-art material property measurement system resulted from this research project to nation-wide researchers, we are playing a role as technology center in material science under multi-extreme conditions. Bilateral collaboration treaties were signed with 7 research centers and more than 25 laboratories are now working together in various material research activities.
Ⅳ. Results
1. Instruments generating multi-extreme conditions
We established the high pressure cell development technique, combined it with high-field and low-temperature environment, and founded basis for material science under multi-extreme conditions. To develope high pressure cell, search for the suitable material - mechanically strong enough to endure the high pressure, appropriate thermal and magnetic properties, is prerequisite.
We developed 2 GPa hydrostatic pressure cell made of Maraging 300 steel which has elastic limit of 19.6 GPa, hardness 53.5 HRC. Combined it with the high-field and low temperature technique, electrical transport measurement system under extreme conditions is now available. To cope with the recent increasing interest in magnetic property study under high pressure, we developed the pressure cell for magnetic property measurement using BeCu and MP35N alloy. MP35N is a Co-Ni alloy which has very low magnetic susceptibility even though it has high elastic limit up to 2 GPa and hardness of 53 HRC. The elastic limit of BeCu is 1.65 GPa and hardness 45 HRC. It is constituted as a part of SQUID magnetic property measurement system. The material research under high pressures is extended to magnetic property study, which makes more broad and profound material research possible.
A sample rotation system, 360°rotation for both θ?φ directions, together with controller were developed and became a part of 20 Tesla superconducting magnet system. It can be used for the electrical anisotropy study of various material such as organic superconductor which shows quasi 1-dimensional Fermi surface characteristics.
2. Development of high sensitivity measurement systems
On the basis of the accumulated precision temperature measurement and control technique, we developed a complete set of thermal property measurement systems - including thermo-power, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient measurement, which are known to be difficult.
DC method, a constant temperature gradient applied with varying magnitude and polarity at each of the sample ends, was used for the thermo-electromagnetic measurement system of 0.1 μV/K sensitivity. The specific heat measuring system made use of precision 2τ method, more precise than the conventional adiabatic or relaxation methods, allows measurements of diverse samples with various shape, size and different thermal properties. A thermal conductivity measurement apparatus using steady-state heat flow method was developed and incorporated into the 9 Tesla physical property measurement system. Strain gauge technique was used for thermal expansion and magneto-strain measurement instrument and further applied to the development of stress effect measuring apparatus. These whole thermal property measurement system are being utilized not only for the basic research such as study on newly discovered MgB2 but also for the applied research such as stress effects of superconducting wires.
To satisfy the demand for the magnetic property studies on various new materials, the high-field low-temperature Hall probe magnetometer, magnetic anisotropy measurement system, etc., were introduced and became parts of comprehensive total magnetic property measurement system. We'd designed and fabricated the Hall probe arrays of increased precision, larger number of probes, and narrower width between the probes, and use them for high accuracy high resolution magnetic property measurements. This method was expanded and further utilized for the development of low-temperature down to 0.3 K, and high-field up to 18 Tesla magnetic property measurement apparatus. For the magnetic anisotropy measurement, the sample rotation systems were introduced, which made it possible to measure angular dependence of magnetization and magnetic torque. Comprehensive magnetic property measurements system encompassing the magnetic anisotropy measurement on highly anisotropic
superconductor and CMR material, is now established.
3. Material researches under multi-extreme conditions
Developed precision measurement system under multi-extreme conditions are actively applied for the collaboration with relevant research laboratories as well as for our own specialized research themes. Some of the highlights are; We analyzed the non-Fermi liquid behaviour through the electric-transport measurements of
under high-pressure, and found out that the
increases as the hybridization between conduction electron and U 5f electron increased by pressure. Magnetic properties and resistance measurements of
at high-pressure and high-field, revealed the importance of Sb 5p hole concentration and the crystal electric field splitting as well as chemical pressure effects due to Ni incorporation. Through the high-pressure high-field electrical transport studies of manganite
a colossal magneto-resistance material, it was discovered that resistivity scales at various pressure, field, and Pr doping contents, which further analyzed in relation to the phase transition from ferromagnetic-metal to antiferromagnetic-insulator. We studied the magnetic anisotropy of layered manganite,
, and found strange magnetic hysteresis. The characteristic features of anisotropy measurements can be well fitted by the new Kouvel-Graham model.
Ⅴ. Proposals for application
The high-pressure cell technology as well as the high sensitivity thermal property measurement technique, of which immediate commercialization is possible, will be transferred to related industry. We are planning to carry on the already active collaboration programs to maximize the performance of the developed user-oriented facilities, which will eventually contribute to the relevant domestic research teams. Not only for the basic science but also for the large scale application such as KSTAR project, the developed set-up's are now being active applied.
