Since accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is now regarded as one of the major reasons of the Global Warming, interest in the reutilization of carbon dioxide is on the increase. About one third of the total CO₂evolution comes from power generation facilities, steel industries, cement producing factories, and pertrochemical industries, with a considerably concentrayed state. Therefore, afterconcentration and/or separation of the CO₂ from other gases, such CO₂should be efficiently converted to valuable compounds. It is desirable for the reutilization of carbon dioxide to develop the technology for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to valuable materials such as methanol, or hydrocarbons. The carbon dioxide reforming with methane into synthesis gas have been also greatly interested as promising ways of CO₂recycling chemistry due to their commercial availability and large treating capability. The hydrogenation of CO₂has been studied over potassium increases the chemisorption ability of CO₂but decreases that of H₂and enhances the interaction between the surface-carbon species and the catalyst surface. The catalytic activity test at high pressure (20 atm) reveals that remarkably high activity and selectivity toward light olefins and C₂+ hydrocarbons can be achieved with Fe-K/ alumina catalysts containing K of high content (K/Fe molar ratio = 0.5, 1.0). In the reaction at atmospheric pressure, the highly K-promoted catalysts give much higher CO formation than unpromoted catalyst. It seems that the enhanced activity for reverse water gas shift reaction favors C₂+ hydrocarbon formation at the elevated pressure. It is deduced that the remakable catalytic properties in the presence of K are attributed to the increase in the suface basicity and the bonding strength of carbon to iron. Besides, various coprecitated catalysts based on iron were also examined for the hydrocaron synthesis from CO₂, and Fe-Zn catalysts were found to be excellent. The Fe-Zn catalyst showed high activity and selectivity for the formation of light olefins and liquid hydrocarbons only when Based on previouse laboratory scacle of catalytic fixation of carbondioxide, we investigated material balance and variable selection for the bench scale design and scaled up reactor system by 20 times. Through the measurement and estimation of amount of each components, the bench scale reactor was completely constructed.Further more, the catalyst was prepared according to its labarotory studies. Bench-scale operation showed that the liquid phase hydrocarbones with water collected in cold trap was regarded as diesel fraction by GC analysis. In order to obtain the optimum bench scale operation for hydrogenation of carbondioxide we have to improve the facilities espacially in control system, unit vessle, line connection and so on. Additionally, the innovation of active catalyst system for hydrogenation of carbondioxide to light olefinic hydrocarbons are carrying out simultaneously. It is expected that higher activity catalyst will be developed in our research. In the 1st stage (1992 - 1995) of this study, we have developed effective catalyst system and catalytic technology for the carbon dioxide reforming of methane. However, high temperature needs to obtain high catalytic activity and yields of synthesis gas because the CO₂reforming has high endothermicity and equilibrium limit. In this study, the CO₂reforming of methane into synthesis gas (H₂/CO) was investigated in a membrane reactor to alleviate chemical equilibrium limit. The membrane used in this study was composed of hydrogen- permselective Pd film supported on porous ceramic tubes such as g-Al₂O₃,ZrO₂, and a-Al₂O₃and was synthesiszed by electroless plating method at 80℃. Catalytic membrane reactor endurable even at high temperature was constructed for applying the CO₂ reforming of methane and measuring gas permeability. When catalytic membrane, which was composed of Pd-coated-g-Al₂O₃ membrane and KNiCa/ZSl catalyst, was applyed in the CO₂reforming, CO₂conversion and synthesis gas yields 35% as high as the equilibrium value were obtained in the temperature range of 500 - 600℃. Employment of catalytic membrane reactor, which shifted the equilibrium towards higher conversions of carbon dioxide through selective removal of hydrogen as a product into outside of membrane, permit operation of the reactor at lower temperature above ca. 180℃ compared to conventional reaction. Therefore, it was contributed to save energy in the CO₂reforming with endothermicity. From this result, it can be concluded that catalytic membrane technology is very efffctive for the alleviation of chemical equilibrium in the CO₂ reforming. In order to diminish the greenhouse effect which is induced due to CO₂ many attempts have been tried to utilize CO₂as a carbon source. Most of them have based on the aspects about the reduction of CO₂. As a thinking in a different way, CO₂ could be also considered as an oxidant instead of burden of hydrogen sources. The ability of CO₂to form surface carbonates and participate redox reactions could make CO₂effective as an oxidant in the heterogeneous reaction such as the oxidative dehydrogenation, which gives valuable products. The oxidative reaction of hydrocarbons such as methane, propane, and ethylbenzene with CO₂were performed over supported metal oxide catalysts on ZSM-5 zeolite, which was also characterized to have the preference of CO₂ adsorption. The oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene into styrene was also found to be mediated using CO₂. That is, carbon dioxide could be utilized as an oxidant for the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene into styrene over the zeolite-supported iron oxide catalysts. Carbon dioxide attributed to enhance not only the activity for the ethylbenzene dehydrogenation but also the coke stability to supported magnetite (Fe₃O₄) catalyst. In the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO₂, syngas as well as olefins were produced simultaneously over magnetite and ferrites-supported zeolite catalysts. Oxygen deficient magnetite or ferrite phases which were dispersed as'matrix isolated sites'on ZSM-5 zeolite support seemed to be an active site for hydrocarbon dehydrogenation by using carbon dioxide. Therefore, these observations indicate that not only oxygen from CO₂molecule could be utilized as an oxidant but also surface design for chemisorptive CO₂ activation of CO2 as an oxidant.Synthesis and Characterization of New Transition Metal Complexes with CO₂The target complexes of Co, Ru, Ir, and Pt which are suitable for the activation of carbon dioxide were sythesized. n the complexes of Co, useful organic product was synthesized in the mixture reaction of carbon dioxide and alkyne. Pour-membered Ru, Ir, and Pt complexes with ring strin easiliy react with carbon dioxide to give the inserted product. Synthesized products were characterized by NMR cyclic voltammetry and X-ray diffraction.Biological CO2 fixation and a feedstock production process.(Purpose and Importance)Biological methods, in particular using microalgal photosynthesis, have several merits such as no requirements for the pretreatments of the flue gas and the further disposal of CO₂and mild conditions for CO2 fixation. Carbon fixed by microalgae is incorporated into carbohydrates, lipids, so energy, chemicals, or foods can be produced from algal biomass. In spite of the advantages mentioned above of the biological CO2 fixation process, the process has a maior limitation of the requirement for the huge land for the application of the process to industry. The development of the CO2 fixation system having higher rates of CO2 elimination is required to make the process practical in Korea at which not much land is available. A vertical tubular reactor, which has high CO2 fixation rate per unit area and is cheap to set-up, may be suitable for microalgae culturing for CO2 elimination. Few works with regard to the application of a vertical reactor as CO2 fixation system have been carried out. Much work should be done to apply the tubular reactor for culturing microlagae to eliminate CO2.The contents and scope is the selection of a microalgal strain and study for the optimum culturing condition.Since thousands of microalgal strains are avilable, it is important to select a suitable microalgal strain for CO2 fixation work. The most suitable strain may be the local one which is already adapted to local condition. Since it takes long time to isolate a microalgal strain from local environment, several strains were obtained from the foreign microlagae culture collection institutes to do CO2 fixation work in a tubular reactor. To determine the optimum culturing conditions, the effects of operating parameters such as CO2 concentrations of feeding gas and light intensities on the CO2 fixation rates were investigated. The microalgae, which will be used for CO2 fixation, has been selected by comparison of the CO2 fixation rates under the best operating conditions. While doing CO2 fixation work in tubular reactors, the screening works for the isolation of suitable microalgal strains have been carried out. And, to develop a CO2 fixation system having high fixation rates, the performance of a 0.5L vertical tubular reactor(3cm x70cm) was analyzed for CO2 fixation. Based on the results obtained from the work, 5L reactor(10cm x 80cm) have been built to do CO2 fixation work in a larger reactor. To enhance the effciency of light utilization in a 5L reactor, internal draught tubes of various diameters were tried and the performance of the reactors have been analyzed The optimum diameter of the draught tube was determined for a 5L reactor.○Identification of the suitable microalgal strain and the culturing condition Following results have been obtained from the study for the identification of the suitable strain and the optimum culturing condition for the microalgaes. 1. Chlorella HA-1 and S. platensis showed the steady CO2 fixation rates up to 10% of CO2 concentrations. Chlorella HA-1 showed 30% higher rate than that of S.platensis. Chlorella HA-1 was identified to be the suitable microalgae for the fixation of CO2 emitted from LNG power plants. The CO2 fixation activity of Chlorella HA-1 was partly inhibited when the CO2 concentration is 15%.2. Optimum light intensity for the CO2 fixation by Chlorella HA-1 is about 6Klux. S. platnesis has similar optimum light intensity.3. NOx in feeding gas has slight effect on the CO2 fixation activity of Chlorella HA-1 up to 80ppm. The CO2 fixation activity of S. platensis was remarkably decreased when 5% CO2 gas containing 50ppm NOx. It is not practical to apply S. platensis directly for CO2 fixation from flue gas.○ Operation of a Vertical Tubular Reactor.A vertical tubular reactor has been built and tested for CO2 fixation by culturing microalgaes.1. The CO2 fixation rate of a 0.5L(3cm x 70cm) tubular reactor was determined to be 435g CO2/m²-day by culturing Chlorella HA-1 which is about 11 times higher than that of a raceway pond. The required land is expected to be decreased remarkably if a vertical tubular reactor is employed for biological CO2 fixation. 2. To scale-up the reactor,5L reactors (l0cm x 70cm) have been built and operated for CO2 fixation. The fixation rate of a 5L reactor is determined to be 335g CO2/m²-day which is 30% lower than that of 0.5L reactor. The lower CO2 fixation of the 5L reactor is due to the light limitation. To enhance the effciency of light utilization, an internal draught tube was added to the 5L reactor. The CO2 fixation rate of the 5L reactor with an internal draught tube is 21% higher than that of the 5L reactor. The ratio of internal draught tube diameter to the reactor diameter is an important parameter for the CO2 fixation performance of the reactor. And some applications can be summarized as follows.1. Chlorella HA-1 was the most suitable for the fixation of CO2 emitted from LNG power plants. Since the CO2 fixation process by Chlorella HA-1 do not need any pretreatments, the operation cost for CO2 fixation is expected to be low compared to other processes. 2. The vertical tubular reactor has very high CO2 fixation rate compared to a conventional reactor(e.g. raceway pond). As a result, the reactor will be ideal for the countries like Korea at which not enough space for the installation of a biological CO2 fixation process is available. If an industrial scale system for vertical tubular reactor is developed, it will be in practical use. 3. Since the vertical tubular reactor showed much higher CO2 fixation rate compared to a conventional reactor, the scale-up study of the vertical tubular reactor will be carried out. The study for the isolation of a local microalgal strain will be also done to get a suitable strain for outdoor cultivation.
