Research Background: In order to satisfy with a variety of demands from all industrial fields, new metallic structural materials should have (1) ultrahigh strength, (2) high formability, (3) simple chemical composition and (4) light weight. Scientists, researchers and engineers in materials science and engineering agree with the fact that the existing conventional manufacturing processes for metallic structural materials cannot give a solution for development of new metallic structural materials. More importantly, they believe that the refinement of microstructure of metals and alloys down to submicrometer is the key breakthrough for development of new metallic structural materials. In the past, the processing techniques including inert gas condensation, high-energy ball milling, sliding wear have been used for manufacturing submicrometer graind materials. However, these procedures have the inherent disadvantages that some residual porosity remains and large bulk materials cannot be fabricated. More recently, the severe plastic straining methods for fabricating ultrafine grained bulk materials without residual porosity was introduced. By developing the cutting-edge technologies of severe plastic straining and its application for fabricating ultrafine grained bulk materials which are highly formable and exhibit ultrahigh strength, Ultrafine-Grained Structural Materials Lab (UGSML) plays a key role on developing new class of structural materials as a world leading research group.
