Natural gas hydrate, generally called as gas hydrate, is a special type of clathrate hydrates. Gas hydrate is a metastable solid compound which mainly consists of methane and water, but it is stable under the specific conditions, low temperature and high pressure. Recently, gas hydrates draw attention as promising future energy resource since it is one of major reservoir of methane in the earth. Methane content entrapped in gas hydrate was estimated 10⁴ Gt, which indicates twenty five times more methane content in gas hydrate than in oil field, condensation field, and natural gas field. Meanwhile, gas hydrate is known as environmentally favored energy resource since the amount of CO₂ release during methane combustion in gas hydrate is less, 70%, than in currently used petroleum. Gas hydrate is worldwide present in sediment in deep sea and permafrost region.
While the need of substitute energy resource is raising due to limited amount of fossil energy, gas hydrate is regarded as one solution for the future clean energy resources. Therefore, recently most of advanced countries have conducted projects to explore and develop techniques for the future use of gas hydrate. In Korea, East Sea shows proper physical condition for gas hydrate and the possibility of gas hydrate potential was suggested based on the result of preliminary exploration by KIGAM in the region. Considering the fact that more than 98% of energy resources needed rely on import, the exploration of gas hydrate in our jurisdictional territory is important to secure supply of nonconventional energy resources and to the delimitation of outer limit of continental shelf with neighboring countries. Moreover, data collected during gas hydrate exploration could be used for the prediction of natural geohazard in the region. On the other hand, research on physical and chemical characteristic of gas hydrate for the formation, accumulation and dissociation is necessary to know conditions for gas production, processing, transportation and storage of gas hydrates. The overall technologies for gas hydrate production are also directly related to the plugging in pipeline, gas kick during production, sequestration of greenhouse gas.
This study aims to confirm gas hydrate potential and its location in addition to acquire exploration technologies through surveys in East Sea. Moreover, establishment of fundamental technologies necessary for processing, development and practical use of gas hydrate through simulation study by using self-developed apparatus is one of major purpose.
In order for gas hydrate potential, deep sea core samples were taken in the Ulleung Basin, 16, 4, 5 cores for year 2000, 2001 and 2002 respectively. The core sediments mainly consist of muddy sediments with silty sands, lapilli tephra and ash layers. The core sediments contain more than 1% of TOC, and most of the organic matters show marine origin. Calculation of gas volume per volume of wet sediment In drilled core in 2000 varies at 0.1 to 82.0 ml HC/L wet sediment and 19 out of 32 samples satisfy the condition suggested by Sloan (1998). Methane content and isotopic composition indicate that the hydrocarbon gases from the sediments were generated from bacterial activities of methanogenic microbes. Most of the samples drilled in the year of 2001 and 2002 show gas content less than 10 mL HC/L wet sediment. According to the sulfate contents in the interstitial waters, zone of the carbon degradation of the sediments drilled by piston cores (year 2001 and 2002) does not reach the methanogenesis stage.
The sedimentary deposits in the Ulleung Basin can be divided into two distinct seismic units on the basis of reflector character and geometry. Unit I is characterized by a well-stratified facies consisting arp and continuous reflectors of uniform seismic character. This unit has a sheet-shaped external ion and some echo characters including pock mark, gas column and mud mound occurred within Unit Ⅰ. Locally, an acoustic turbid layer, which makes the echo character of the underlying sedimentary unit is also present. This turbid layer indicates the presence of gas bubbles within the sedimentary sequence which scatter and attenuate the acoustic energy. Unit Ⅰ, the central part of the basin floor and Is generally bounded upper slope by Unit Ⅱ is interpreted to be turbidites. In contrast to Unit Ⅰ, Unit Ⅱ is identified as a structureless-to-chaotic facies. This unit is only distributed on the slope and base-of-slope region and it consists of hummocky or chaotic echo characters with variable amplitude. It has a distinct, lense- or wedge-shaped external form. The lense-shaped external form of Unit Ⅱ with a lack of internal structure is the characteristic of debris-flow deposits.
The survey area in year 2000 is easy to determinate the high amplitude reflector with polarity reversal, which is parallel with the seafloor and the requirement of the BSR. In particular, this reflector was observed in the southeast part of survey area. Moreover, this reflector was observed in the sedimentary layer with poor lamination and particularly in the low part of seafloor area which had a high relief due to gas seep resulted from developed mud flow and debris flow deposits. The survey area in 2001 is the north of Ulleung Island and its sediment mostly consist of turbidity current deposits. The reflector layer, which is developed in shallow sedimentary layer, is parallel with the seafloor, As a result, the observation of BSR is very difficult. However, high amplitude reflector with polarity reversal was observed through about 6 ㎞ on the south part of the survey area in year 2001. This reflect is located upper part of the anticline and showed the characteristics such as gas-water-contact. Moreover, pork mark and gas column by gas seepage were observed in the south part of the survey area. The survey area in 2002 is the northwest of Ulleung Island included in Korea Plateau. This area can not generate large amount of gas, because sedimentary layer is very thin and the base rock with a high is relief located in the near the seafloor.
Bathymetry data was collected with the SIMRAD EM12S multibeam echosounder. EM12S operates at 13 kHz frequency and scans 81 beams with the mapping capability from 50 m to 11000 m water depths with the swath width within 3 times of water depth. Morphological features of study area are largely divided Into the eastern deep-sea plain and the western continental slope. Most of western areas is covered by continental slope with high slope angle, while its northern Part consists relatively of gentle slope angle. On the contrary, the eastern part of study area is developed predominantly by flat and broad features (around 2000 m water depths) due to the influence of Ulleung Basin, while the northern area of Ulleung Island is occupied by relatively irregular features.
In order to understand the process of formation and dissociation of gas hydrate, the phase equilibrium and the formation/dissociation kinetics of gas hydrate were measured by using specially set up experimental apparatus. The effect of deposits on two-phase equilibrium and the characteristics of kinetic inhibitor on the gas hydrate formation were also measured in this study, Heat of hydrate dissociation measured by using an isothermal micro-calorimeter (IMC) and a specifically modified high-pressure cell show 65.22 kJ/mol, 65.81 kJ/mol and 56.84 kJ/mot at 274.15 K for carbon dioxide, nitrogen and methane (main component of natural gas) of gas hydrates, respectively. Their calculated hydration numbers, 7.23, 5.94 and 6.38, show a good agreement with previously reported result by other research group within an acceptable error range. A new method for measuring thermal conductivity of gas hydrate was designed, and a high-pressure cell was manufactured to perform the experimental study, Toluene was used as a criterion material for measuring thermal conductivities to verify the experimental accuracy of within 1.5 %. Density of the methane hydrate was found to be 0.9146 g/cm3 by using both hydration number and cage occupancy from NMR results. Cage occupancies for methane and propane mixed gas hydrate were compared with the modeling results and NMR data indicates that methane was captured into small cages and propane into large cages. Raman spectroscopy shows that methane could be captured into both cages of structure-I hydrate and mixed hydrate of methane and THF would form structure-Ⅱ hydrate.
Phase equilibrium of mixed gas hydrate of carbon dioxide and methane, main components of natural gas, showed that three-phase equilibrium line would shift toward that of pure carbon dioxide hydrate as the concentration of carbon dioxide in vapor phase increased, and four-phase equilibrium of hydrate-liquid water-liquid carbon dioxide-vapor appeared above the pressure of 45 bar.Methane hydrates formed in porous media show high dissociation pressure at certain temperature, and this effect show increase as the pore size decrease. In case of structure-H hydrate formed from methane gas with 2,2-dimethylbutane as a help gas, its equilibrium pressure was much lower than that of pure methane hydrate. Also, from the NMR analysis regarding to the structure-H hydrates, the coexistence of structure-I and structure-H hydrate was identified according to the formation condition of pressure and temperature. Methane hydrates showed vigorous reaction rate at the beginning of hydrate formation, and after hydrate formation the reaction rate show decrease to reach the ultimate steady state. The measurement of methane hydrate dissociation rate at 15℃ and various pressure of 25 bu, 20 bar and IS bar, the dissociation rate difference due to the pressure difference was little above the pressure of 20 bar, and almost all methane gas was released from methane hydrate within 200 minutes. Throughout the explored sea area the salinity of water in sediment gaps is 3.5 % near the sea surface, and 3.0 % at the depth of 500 m. The measurements of formation pressure of gas hydrates at the condition of explored sea area show the formation pressure increase as the amount of electrolytes such as NaCl increases.
A numerical model for investigating hydrate dissociation phenomena was developed in this study and dissociated gas-water producing behavior during thermal injection, depersonalization method, and chemical additive injection method were used. The developed model simulated to examine the effect of reservoir and hydrate properties on the dissociation time shows that the well stimulation in the beginning of production and initial hydrate saturation are significantly sensitive on the hydrate dissociation. The Investigation of production by depressurization indicates that the pulse type behavior with continuous decline overall is appeared unlike monotonic decline in conventional gas reservoir. Methanol injection for a short time at the beginning of production caused a significant difference in dissociated area comparing to unstimulated case. From the parametric study of methanol injection to design the optimum injection strategy, the methanol content is very efficient on hydrate dissociation. However, the increase in injection rate causes only the increase in well pressure and no distinctive effect is observed in dissociation phenomena. Therefore, the cyclic stimulation method should be considered to control hydrate dissociation time. Numerical results of thermal injection indicate that the pressure behavior is different from that of depressurization because hydrate dissociation is stimulated by the increase of reservoir temperature. Parametric study of thermal injection shows the effect of well stimulation in the beginning of production increase as the thermal conductivity of reservoir rock is small.
Regarding utilization of gas hydrate, experiments about a probability of a storage, transportation hydrate plugging in pipeline were performed by using artificially manufactured jacket-type stirred reactor for methane and natural gas.It was observed that during gas hydrate formation, gas storage ability of hydrate is greatly affected by conditions such as temperature, pressure stirring rate and additives including surfactants and chemicals. Specially accelerator such as anionic surfactants in small concentration is higher gas storage ability than other additives. From water solution with 25ppm anionic surfactants, the storage capacity of 170 vol. of gas/vol. of water in hydrates was achieved at a 6 MPa and 274.IS K within 3 hours of hydrate nucleation. And it is observed the gas hydrate crystal formation according to many additives in the view cell.
For the purpose of understanding mechanism of hydrate plugging and examining inhibitors for prevention of hydrate plugging in pipeline, three phase equilibrium conditions of methane hydrate were measured in pipeline. In order to examine the effect of hydrate formation and inhibition under the flowing pipeline condition, experiments were carried out at varying flow velocities and thermodynamic inhibitors under a constant pressure. It was verified experimentally that flow velocity can be considered as one of the significant factors triggering the increase in the formation temperature and inhibition performance of methanol is superior In that of ethylene glycol. The results have been found to be consistent with previously published reference data.
