Hydride forming metals and alloys have been extensively investigated because of their technical applications to electrode materials for Ni/MH rechargeable batteries. However, most studies have been focussed on the understanding of the mechanism of the hydrogen evolution reaction with respect to the electrocatalytic behaviour and on the modification of the electrocatalytic properties by introducing substitutional atoms into the alloy. Under the circumstance, it is necessary not only to elucidate the mechanism of hydrogen transport through the hydride forming metals and alloys, but also to determine the relevant kinetic parameters. This collaborative research with Polish Academy of Sciences is aimed at analysing of hydrogen transport through the hydride forming metals and alloys such as Pd, Pd alloys, and $LaNi_{5}$,$MmNi_{5}$ , ZrNi₂, ZrFe₂H₃, ZrCo₂Ht $YFe₂H{5.5}$ For this purpose, anodic current transient technique and numerical simulation were employed to determine the effect of the alloy composition, phase transformation, movement of phase boundary, surface roughness and pore structure on hydrogen transport. From the analysis of anodic current transient, it is indicated that the Cottrell relation between current and time is no longer satisfied at the current transient in case the change in surface concentration of hydrogen with time is specified either by the rate of the charge transfer reaction or by the rate of the hydrogen transfer reaction. It is consequently suggested that the boundary condition at the electrode surface during hydrogen transfer is not fixed at the specific electrode/electrolyte system by itself, but it is rather simultaneously determined even at any electrode/electrolyte system by the potential step and the nature of the electrode surface, depending upon e.g. the presence or absence of the surface oxide scales.Furthermore, potentiostatic current transient and linear sweep voltammogram calculated theoretically from the well-defined fractal profiles are analysed for hydrogen transport under the condition where hydrogen diffusion in the electrode is kinetically coupled with the charge transfer reaction at the electrode/electrolyte interface, and then the effects of particle size distribution and pores in the composite electrode on hydrogne transport are investigated with the help of ac-impedance spectra calculated based upon the transimission line model. As a result, it is expected that the results of this research provide the basic knowledge on the mechanism of hydrogen transport during charging and discharging of secondary batteries, and contribute the development of high performance secondary batteries and supercapacitors.
