Flexible display technology is now under intensive investigation because of the advantages in flat panel displays, such as extremely thin thickness and mechanical flexibility. However, the materials currently used in displays are very sensitive to moisture and oxygen, and the polymer substrates have very low barrier properties. Hence, in order to achieve a long lifetime devices, high performance barrier coating for the substrate and a proper encapsulation technology must be developed. In addition, display manufacturing process has to be microscopically defined so that thermal expansion of plastic film substrate may not be suitable for such process. To overcome the shortcoming a new film material has to be investigated in order to ensure a low thermal expansion of the film. Fot the purpose, new material development research has been carried out In the research, colorless polyimides as well as polysulfones with curable functional groups were developed with an aim to give high temperature stability as well as low thermal expansion coefficient.Generally, a multi-layer structure with organic/inorganic layers is widely studied for high quality barrier coatings. Here, the organic layers will cover the defects (pinholes, micro-cracks) created in inorganic layers which are produced during the deposition process. In present work, we developed a new structure for high quality barrier coating which has a simple three-layered structure of organic/inorganic/inorganic layers. A thin film passivation structure for enhanced stability of flexible displays was investigated. The thin film passivation structure is composed of a three-layered structure of organic/inorganic/inorganic layers. By using this structure, high performance barrier properties were observed $(<5x10\^{-3} g/m^{2}{\cdot}day)$, where polyimide or parylene was used as the organic layer, silicon oxide (SiO₂) and silicon oxynitride (SiON) as the first and second inorganic layers, respectively. Also, it was found that the lifetime of flexible OLED was improved by using the passivation layers.Due to high gas permeation of plastic film, the flexible display''s life time is yet to reach a product life span. To overcome such shortcoming, plastic films requires gas barriers. In this project, systematic analysis on the materials and process have been carried out. The achieved barrier, in terms of WVTR, is beyond limit of Mocon Test.
