The synthesis of new nanostructured materials with tailored porosity is a major challenge in advanced materials science. Porous materials with three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected ordered structures are technologically important for a variety of applications such as catalysts, supporters, separation systems, sensors, adsorbents, electronic materials, double-layer capacitors and hydrogen storage materials. Carbon possesses an excellent chemical, mechanical and thermal stability, and is a very Interesting material for a variety of applications. Recently, a remarkable progress has been made In the synthesis of carbons with periodic porous structures. This progress was achieved using templates, such as zeolites, ordered mesoporous silicas and silica colloidal crystals for the synthesis of ordered microporous (pore size <2 nm), mesoporous (2-50 nm) and macroporous (>50 nm) carbons, respectively. Colloidal templating has been also extensively explored as an efficient route to the production of various core-shell or hollow capsule structures. Many new nanostructured shell structures either with solid core or hollow core were generated depending up the removal of core templates. One of the advantages of the colloidal crystalline template method is that the pore sizes of the carbon structure can be easily controlled in the range of several nm to several ${\mu}m$ by varying the silica spheres in the colloidal crystal template. Such pore size control can render porous carbons with regulated surface area, pore volume and structural integrity. But it is challenging to synthesize smaller silica spheres with uniform sizes, especially as the particle sizes are getting smaller than 50 nm in diameter and also to form a ordered closed packed colloidal crystalline array using such smaller particles. In addition, there are very few reports on modification of the core shape beyond the common spherical shape. Very little attention has been paid to the core nanostructure. Thus it would be more challenging to create a new core-shell materials through modifying the core structure by replacing amorphous spherical core with nanostructured nonspherical core. More recently, rapidly expanding research efforts in this field have been pushed further to produce more complex hierarchical multimodal porous carbons. But the pores in these carbons were not distributed in ordered fashon.
