The primal purposes of this project are to estimate the groundwater reserve in Jeju Island and to produce groundwater resource with high-yield and high mineral contents. They are also to establish a hydrogeological conceptual model for the groundwater system and to obtain long-term data which could be used in interpreting or analyzing hydrogeological characteristics of Jeju Island.
The distribution of low-permeable rocks such as U-formation, tuff layer, and rocks of pahoihoi lava is closely related to groundwater reserves, The detailed distribution map of low-permeable rocks was completed in Seguipo area, and groundwater flow was analyzed according to relief of the low-permeable rocks.
There are much more rainfall in high elevated, southern parts than in low elevated, northern parts of Jeju Island. The precipitation pattern has a rough periodic cycle of 4$\sim$5 years in terms of total annual amount. Normal discharges in 6 main streams were monitored so that they were highly related to rainfall. Onpocheon and Oedocheon were monitored for the daily variations of discharge and water quality. The discharges were so variated during the day, and water qualities were correlated with photosynthesis. Rainfall infiltration and soil moisture contents in various depths were monitored using drainage gauges in Oedocheon watershed. The rainfall infiltration ratio into the soil were distributed from 6.3 to 59.1%, and the infiltration rates were from 0.2$\sim$0.7 cm/hr in normal times, but the rates were more higher during heavy rain events.
The porosities of the clinker layer were 21.8 to 82.2% by the soil analyses in Gotzawal areas. The porosities in basaltic clinker were estimated to 12%, and in trachytic clinker 23% through neutron geophysical logging.
A multi-depth monitoring system was installed at five seawater intrusion monitoring wells in order to obtain temporal/spatial variations of EC and temperature. Spectral filter analysis was carried out to analyze the influence of rainfall on EC and temperature variations. In addition, a simple method was developed to estimate the depth of the fresh/saline water interface in coastal aquifers using two sets of pressure data.
Background quality of fresh groundwater collected from the mid-high land of Jeju Island shows typical results from water-rock interactions with low contamination. The contents of trace elements seemed to be controled by mineralization, the environment of pH and Eh, and aquifer rock properties.
Jeju volcanic ash soils have typical chemical properties of silt-rich, low pH, low SiO2, and high Al and Fe. Ferromagnesian mineral-originated heavy metals such as Zn, Ni, Co, Cr are enriched in volcanic ash soils. Cultivated soils have also similar properties of volcanic ash soils, and have dominantly clayey textures, increase of SiO2, and decrease of A12O3 and Fe2O3 contents in contrast to natural volcanic soils. Distinct decrease of Cr contents may be explained by the formation of soluble organic complex, and uptake by plants and release into soil porewater. However, high reducing capacities of volcanic soils compared to inland soils suggests very low potential of the contamination by Cr(VI).
General planning procedure for tracer test based on literatures and field experiences are summarized in practical way and suitable tracer tests method considering hydrogeological properties of Jeju volcanic aquifer are suggested. Point-dilution tracer tests with multi-level observation points are applied to Seogwang well field to study the hydrogeological properties of the area which is characterized by fast vertical groundwater movement within a well due to connection of different confined aquifers.
To investigate the first flush effect of roof runoff, pH, EC, Cl and turbidity of rain-water and roof runoff were measured using the Hydrolab DS5. Compared to rain-water, qualities of roof runoff are more acidic and contaminated with dust and other debris from the roof. Long term and continuous monitoring qualities of rain-water and roof runoff are essential in properly evaluating quality of roof runoff for groundwater infiltration.
The results obtained from this project could be of benefit to the regional groundwater management plan of the Jeju provincial government.
