I. Development of Nano- Cathode Material for Li Secondary Battery [NiCoMn] based cathode material has been shown to be a most promising alternative material for $LiCoO_2$ because of its excellent electrochemical and safety characteristics. However, this material is reported generally difficult to get single phase due to the complicate composition, the cathode properties of $Li[Co_xMn_yNi_z]O_2$ were found to depend sensitively on the synthetic conditions. Moreover when it applied Lithium ion battery, active carbon`s need is much more than the Lithium ion batteries with $LiCoO_2$ because its conductivity lowers than $LiCoO_2$. High carbon concentration in batteries, it induces reducing of energy density. Therefore [NiCoMn] based cathode material is unsuitable for high power and capacity batteries such as a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) application. In this study, we carried out researches on high capacity cathode material $LiCo_xMn_yNi_zO_2$ and the process of mass production to commercialize the technology. We also fry to modify $LiCo_xMn_yNi_zO_2$ surface by coating process to get high electrochemical properties and improved safety. The cathode material $LiCo_xMn_yNi_zO_2$ is synthesized by co-precipitation method and investigated the powder and electrochemical properties. For three different compositions of cathode material, all the capacities have over 185mAh/g at the cut-off Voltage of 4.3V. It also showed good rycle properties so that it exhibited the discharge capacity after 800 cycles over 85% of initial capacity in 2000mAh full-cell. The properties have been found to be improved by coating being related even with the electrical conductivity of cathode and induce higher thermal stability. Especially, Over-charging property related cell safety has been greatly improved through coating process. We conducted trial runs of the pilot plant and monitored various conditions for mass production. From the monitored results, we designed CSTR coprecipitation reactor for mass production and developed automated process line. So we constructed making facilities for 600 ton per year of coprecipitation metal hydroxide and 360 ton per year of cathode material in 2007. Now we are continuously producing cathode materials using the mass production facilities. The produced cathode material is supplied for local and international Battery Company and applied Lithium ion battery on the market. II. Development of surface nano-coating technologies for anode active materials of secondary batteries Phosphorus doped silicon that synthesized by plasma arc discharge method and a natural graphite with diameter of $20{\mu}m$ are used as the composite materials for the anode for lithium secondary batteries. We expect that the composite provides enhancement of specific capacity and cyclic performance due to synergetic effect of the excellent cycling behavior of graphite and large specific capacity of silicon material. For the preparation of silicon, plasma arc discharge method produces 50$\sim$100nm-sized poly-crystalline silicon particles. However, an attempt was made to dope the plasma generated silicon particles with phosphorous atoms in a one step process by introducing PH3/Ar(5:95) gas as the phosphor containing precursor for to increase electric conductivity of silicon particles. In order to investigate the properties of the synthesized silicon particles, XRD, XPS, SEM and SIMS analyses are employed. To confirm the electrochemical effects of phosphorous, we made undoped poly-crystalline silicon/graphite composite and phosphorous doped poly-crystalline silicon/graphite composite by ultrasonic dispersion and applied the materials mentioned above as the working electrode materials for lithium half cells. The cells are assembled to pouch type and are galvanostatically charged and discharged in the voltage range 0$\sim$2V versus Li/Li+ at a constant current density of 30mAh/g. The results explained that phosphorous doped poly-crystalline silicon/graphite composite showed better performance in cycle stability than that of undoped poly crystalline silicon/graphite composite. The graphite acts as buffering matrix for volumetric change of silicon during alloying and de-alloying.
