1. A prerequisite to understand reactions on ice is to study fundamental
reaction steps such as surface diffusion and proton tunneling. For this, we first
examined self-diffusion of water molecules at ice surfaces. The surface diffusion
coefficients were measured, and the mechanism of water molecular diffusion was
suggested.
2. H/D isotopic exchange between surface water molecules were examined. The
H/D exchange occurred preferentially at an ice surface, whereas the vertical exchange
reactions were much slower.
3. Reactions at frozen alcohol surfaces were examined. SN1, SN2 reactions of
alcohols with HBr led to kinetic trapping of reaction intermediates and diverse
product distributions compared to those in a liquid phase.
4. We observed that Na+ and Cl- ions distributed differently at an ice surface,
leading to segregation of the ions at the surface.
Ice surface chemistry is an essential ingredient for rational approaches toward
scientific understanding of atmospheric and interstellar molecular evolution
processes. Research in this project has resulted in the following publications.
