에서 As(III)와 As(V)를 분리하는데 효과적이었다.
총금속 농도의 최대값은 다음과 같다: 62,350mg/kg As, 43mg/kg Cd, 4.7mg/kg Cr, 599mg/kg Cu,
51,400mg/kg Pb, 3,850mg/kg Zn, 40wt.% Fe, 21,400mg/kg Mn, 7,850mg/kg Al.

The objectives of the proposed research are i) to understand the geochemistry of arsenic and several heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb. Zn) and the characteristics of their relevant parameters, ii) to investigate the fate of heavy metals, and iii) to develop a method for controlling them in mine tailings of abandoned mines. Specific objectives are i) to determine arsenic species in mine tailings
by applying a newly developed arsenic speciation method, and to provide the basis for understanding the geochemical processes that control the distribution and behaviors of heavy metals(As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in mine tailings, ii) to investigate the vertical distributions (0-220 cm) of arsenic
and heavy metals in mine tailings and nearby paddy fields, and their mobility through
water-leaching experiments, iii) to investigate the effects of pH, adsorbate/adsorbent ratio,
temperature and ionic strength on the adsorption of arsenic [As(V)] onto soils through batch kinetic and batch equilibrium tests.
(1) Arsenic speciation and the characteristics of heavy metals in mine tailings of abandoned mines
Three abandoned mines which had produced mainly gold were selected for collection and analysis of mine tailings in the present study. The mines are located respectively at Bongwha (Jingok mine), Cheonan (Cheonbo mine), and Sangju (Sino mine) in Korea. It was found that the arsenic speciation
using an ion exchange method was efficient to separate As(III) and As(V) in leachate of mine
tailings. The concentration of As(V) was found to be 63-99% in the leachate, indicating that As(V) would be the major arsenic species in mine tailings and the tailings were under oxic conditions.
The total concentrations of metal elements in mine tailings were up to 62,350 mg/kg As, 43 mg/kg Cd, 4.7 mg/kg Cr, 599 mg/kg Cu, 51,400 mg/kg Pb, 3,850 mg/kg Zn, 40 wt.% Fe, 21,400 mg/kg Mn, and 7,850 mg/kg Al. There are correlations between total iron and arsenic (&R^2&=0.95), and between
iron and cadmium (&R^2&=0.94), in mine tailings, suggesting that Fe hydrous oxides are important in
controlling As and Cd adsorption reactions in mine tailings. Sulfate was the dominant anion
throughout the leachate of mine tailings, reaching a maximum dissolved concentration of 734 mg/L.
The results of XRD and SEM in mine tailings showed that main sulfide minerals were pyrite(Fe&S_2&), sphalerite((FeZn)S), galena(PbS), chalcopyrite(CuFe&S_2&), and arsenopyrite(FeAsS) which would be the
source of heavy metal contamination in the study area.
(2) Vertical distribution and mobility of arsenic and heavy metals in mine tailings and nearby paddy fields
For the study, the area of Jingok mine (Au-Ag-Pb-Zn) located in Bongwha, Korea has been
selected. The concentrations of arsenic and heavy metals in the mine tailings were extremely high compared to the paddy fields and control sites: up to 6,675 mg/kg for As, 25 mg/kg for Cd, 22
mg/kg for Cr, 383 mg/kg for Cu, 11,135 mg/kg for Pb, 3,600 mg/kg for Zn, 5.73 wt.% for Fe, and 3.05 wt.% for Mn. The concentrations of As and heavy metals in the paddy soils decreased sharply
with increasing distance from the mine tailings, with values still higher than those in the control sites, indicating the contamination of the paddy fields by heavy metals released from the mine
tailings. The vertical distributions of Cd, Cu, Pb, Al, Fe and Mn showed the following common patterns; the highest values in the upper part of mine tailings (0-20 cm), rapid decrease with
increasing depth, and then nearly constant values below the depth of 50 cm. Significant correlations
were found between total Fe and heavy metals (Cd, Cu and Pb), and between total Mn and heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in the mine tailings, indicating that minerals containing Fe and Mn played important roles in the mobility of heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. The fraction of
As(V) ranged from 63 to 100% of total arsenic in each depth of the sampled mine tailings. The high concentrations of total As, heavy metals, sulfate, hydrogen ion and As(V) in the leachates of mine tailings suggest that sulfide minerals containing arsenic and heavy metals in the mine tailings
should be actively oxidized.
(3) Adsorption of arsenic on soil: kinetics and equilibrium Three soil samples, which have negligible background levels of arsenic, were obtained from around
an abandoned mine, Jingok mine located in Bongwha, Korea. The adsorption of arsenic on soil was high at low pH, low adsorbate/adsorbent ratio and high temperature. The reaction was not affected
by ionic strength. pH was a very strong factor in immobilization of arsenic onto soil by adsorption since the adsorption of arsenic on soil was governed by both the charge of mineral surface and the
form of arsenic species. Soil sample containing the highest Fe and Al content, and organic matter showed the greatest arsenic adsorption. Iron hydroxide would act as a main adsorbent for arsenic
adsorption under natural condition in the study area. The adsorption of arsenic on soil was relatively slow, i.e. on the order of hours, which indicates chemical bond formation rather than
electrostatic interaction between arsenic and mineral surface. The results of kinetics and equilibrium adsorption suggest that arsenic forms an inner-sphere bidentate surface complex with iron
oxides/hydroxides of soil. In the future, spectral evidence and structural data for complexes adsorbed
on soil have to be obtained. The adsorption kinetic data were very well described by the power function and simple Elovich equations (&R^2&>0.93). The experimental data of isotherms at various pHs
and temperatures were well explained by Freundlich equation (&R^2&>0.88).
