1. Eruptive and depositional processes of the Kusandong Tuff: Kusandong Tuff is one of the most extensive ignimbrite sheets in the world. This study carried out sedimentological measurements, analyses of modal composition of framework grains, analyses of chemical composition of major and trace elements, and measurements of AMS (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility) and grain fabric in order to unravel eruptive and depositional processes and the location of source vents of the Kusandong Tuff.
2. Early-stage volcanism and sedimentation of Jeju Island: Extensive volcaniclastic sedimentary sequence, named the Seoguipo Formation, occurs beneath the plateau-forming lavas of Jeju Island. Early-to-middle Pleistocene hydromagmatic volcanoes, including Dansan, Dangsanbong, and Yongmeori, are known to be correlative with this sedimentary formation. This study attempted to understand the early-stage volcanism and sedimentation of Jeju Island by carrying out sedimentological study of the subsurface sedimentary formation and its correlative hydromagmatic volcanoes.
3. Origin of lava-delta facies in Ulleung Island and the Cretaceous Hakbong volcanics: Because of shortening of research period from 3 to 2 years, only preliminary results could be obtained for these research subjects. Geological mapping has been completed, however, for the Hakbong volcanics and for the Dodong Basalt in Ulleung Island, which contains the lava-delta facies, providing a basis for further geological research and interpretation.
1. It was revealed that the Cretaceous Kusandong Tuff is not a single eruptive unit, but can be divided into a northern and a southern unit. Sedimentological/volcanological studies reveal that the southern Kusandong Tuff was deposited by a pyroclastic flow and surge associated with exceptionally powerful volcanic eruptions. The location of the source vent has been also reveal by the measurements of the AMS and grain fabric.
2. Studies of the subsurface sedimentary formation and the correlative hydromagmatic volcanoes in Jeju Island reveal that the sedimentary formation formed on land and under the sea under the influence of widespread hydromagmatic volcanism during the early history of Jeju Island. It was also revealed that the hydromagmatic volcanoes underwent a peculiar process of vent migration during their growth.
3. Detailed mapping and outcrop observation reveal that the Hakbong Volcanics originated from a series of subaerial lava flows rather than from intrusions, as opposed to former interpretations. The Dodong Basalt in Ulleung Island is interpreted to comprise subaerial to submarine lava/breccia facies, much of which is sedimentary in origin.
