This study is to investigate the growth feature differences, by focusing on Ordovician cerioid and cateniform tabulate corals from various localities throughout the world. As for the trilobite, this study will comparatively investigate trilobite taxa from the Cambrian and Ordovician strata in the Gondwana and Laurentian paleo-continents.
Detailed study of coralla by transverse serial sections permits the determination and evaluation of life-history strategies, i.e., survival, corallite increase and growth
characteristics for some Ordovician tabulate corals including Lichenaria, Catenipora and Manipora. Lichenaria has long been accepted to be a representative of the most primitive stock of tabulate corals. The degree of paleobiologic complexity and level of colony integration in Lichenaria are, however, surprisingly high for a tabulate coral that has been considered to be primitive. In light of the morphologic characteristics revealed in this study, the genera currently included in family Lichenariidae and order Lichenariida require reassessment and their phylogenetic relationships should be reconsidered. Catenipora and Manipora are early tabulate corals that produced cateniform coralla. In Catenipora,
corallites are arranged in single ranks, whereas Manipora has corallites in single and/or multiple ranks and in agglutinated patches. This study focuses on modes of corallite increase and associated features, and assesses the responses of these corals to different physical environments. Various modes of corallite increase are recognized: one type of axial increase and four types of lateral increase involving normal undamaged corallites,
and one type of axial increase and one type of lateral increase during recovery processes of corallites damaged by sediment/bioclast influx. The types of increase are comparable in both genera, except for one type observed in Manipora only. In both genera, the formation of new ranks by lateral increase was the most effective strategy for quick growth or for regenerating parts of coralla that were damaged by physical disturbances
(e.g., storms). Silicified specimens of Aphelaspis, Bolaspidella, Missisquoiia and Parabolinella from Cambrian strata of the Laurentia were secured from carbonate rocks to understand ontogeny of each taxon. Of ontogenetic stages, the protaspides, which is considered to provide crucial information on higher taxonomic assignment of each taxon, are compared in detail. Unlike other taxa, the Missisquoiia protaspides are not of typical corynexochid type, indicating that Missisquoiia may not be a member of the Corynexochida. Protaspides of the Olenidae from the Gondwana, Laurentia and Baltica are
compared, which demonstrates that morphological plasticity was greater in the protaspid
period than the holaspid period and the plasticity is likely to have been governed by environmental factors such as oxygen content. Taxonomic study on polymerid trilobites from the Cambrian Machari Formation in the Taebaeksan Basin supports the stratigraphic correlation scheme established upon the basis of agnostid trilobites. Paleobiogeographic study of the Missisquoiidae based on cladistic analysis demonstrates that there was active
faunal exchange of the group during Cambro-Ordovician, which is considered possible by planktonic ontogenetic stages prior to the protaspid period that were drifted by oceanic current.
This study should significantly contribute to future studies on systematics, paleoecology, paleogeography and evolution of the tabulate corals and trilobites in general. The results of the study on the corals and trilobites will also be employed to investigate
macro-evolutionary patterns of the other invertebrate animals during the Paleozoic period.
