A main goal is to establish the existence and characteristics of the Yonil Tectonic Line (YTL), which has recently been suspected as a new tectonic line controlling the Miocene crustal deformation in SE Korea. Additionally, characteristics of the basin extension and volcanic eruption in the Miocene Eoil Basin is examined. Geological, structural, and satellite image data have been integrated along the YTL and in the Eoil Basin. Detailed geological and structural maps as well as the paleostress examined by kinematic data of brittle deformations and by main lineaments and circular features were combined to interpret history of the Cenozoic crustal deformation in SE Korea. The YTL can be continuously traced as a fault breccia zone, limiting distinctive Miocene crustal-deformation features including clockwise crustal rotation, volcanic and sedimentary activities, and intrusion of NE-trending mafic dikes to the east of it. The YTL was, thus, a westernmost boundary of the Miocene crustal deformation in SE Korea. During the East Sea opening period of 16.5∼17 Ma, a NNW dextral shear stress was propagated toward inland from shore area, and was finally released by the YTL movement. The YTL is right-bended southward and can be divided into four segments. A NNW segment was acted as a principal displacement zone(PDZ) with strike-slip, while two NE segments and a NS segment as releasing bends with normal-slip and as a dextral transtensional fault with downthrow of the eastern fault block, respectively. The kinematic is concordant with the ever published paleostress field as well as regional tectonic setting data around the Korean Peninsula during the Miocene. At about 15 Ma, the study area experienced the NW-SE transpression, and the E-S transpression at 5∼3.5 Ma, resulting in the reactivation of the preexisting faults as inversed reverse faults aa well as crustal uplift of about a few hundred meters. The E-S transpression is still active and causes earthquakes and top-to-the-west reverse faulting in the region between the YTL and the Ulsan Fault. Meanwhile, the Eoil Basin was extended by NW-SE tension due to the NNW dextral shearing. Basaltic lavas extruded along NE normal faults as a kind of fissure-eruption. The more active effusion of lava was, the deeper subsidence of the basin was. Thus, differential subsidence and nested cauldron structures were formed syndeposionally. It means that volcanism controlled not only the basin-fill, bat also the architectures of the basin itself.
