New fiber pretreatment and refining sequence will be developed to increase paper strength properties and to improve runnability on the papermachine. New fiber testing method will be developed to predict the fiber behavior on papermachine and final paper quality. Mill personnels usually have knowledges about the cutting type and brushing type refining, and their foci are about energy savings and drainage on the wire without much concerns on paper properties at the end of the machine. Actually, the mill personnel do not know well about the fiber properties they are using now. In reality, most of paper properties are decided in the fiber processing step. We will concentrate our research on fiber processing step, which will be subdivided into mechanical pretreatment, special type refining, and post processing. The process developed increased the paper strength properties significantly, and help the stock draining fast and well on the handsheet machine. By doing this, savings in fiber materials and increasing product quality will be achieved. A patent application for physical pretreatment of wood fibers was submitted, and the application number was issued. Various polymers, enzyme, and chemicals were added in the pretreatment process for the enhancement of physical pretreatment effects. Fast determination of a few key fiber properties will help greatly to apply proper fiber treatment processes and will lead to the increase in paper productivity and quality. The assessment of the fiber property with Wet Compaction Tester was done extensively, and found that the WCT values are close to the Water Retention Values. The WCT can be applied to the real papermachine with minor modification. If it is done so, very valuable information about fiber property such as WRV can be measured easily by on-line measurement. The future of the tester is promising, and we will continue to make it to be used on-line soon. Introduction of fiber mechanical pretreatment technology before refining will make significant improvement in fiber strength properties and energy savings on papermachine by increasing drainage. We revealed the effect of temperature and the synergy using polymers in the pretreatment. This technology will help to save the fiber resources by using less fibers for making equivalent strength paper products. New fiber testing method will become one of the most important factors to assess the fiber quality, and could be used on-line for better control of the papermachine.
