We conducted a large-scale study of molecular clouds and star forming regions in Our Galaxy, establishing a unique database with high resolution observations in several molecular transition lines such as 12CO, 13CO, CS, HCO+, C18O. We clarified the physical characteristics of the objects in large scale Galactic environment through various methods of analyses of the spatial-velocity cubic spectral data in statistical and systematic ways. We also clarified the observational clues os systematic star formation from the supershell structure.
We develop a unique method of data reduction and analysis, which are 20-30 times faster than the classical method. The distances to the molecular clouds were determined by revising Galatic rotation curve model and partial corroboration of the velocity dispersions of the clouds and clumps, and their physical parameters are derived. A statistical analyses are conducted on the identified clouds and clumps. Another aim of the study is to search for observational evidences for the propagating star formation as a star formation mechanism in large scale, and to confirm the large scale aspects of the structure and the evolutionary status. In addition, we studied initial infall motions and evolution of radial density distribution in isolated starless cores, which is essential to understand physics in very early stage of low mass star formation.
We performed observations of optically thin and thick line technique with radio molecular lines (1-3 mm) tracing high density regions and sub-millimeter continuum to clarify these peculiar infall motions. This study will give us many observational evidences for profound understanding of low mass star formation.
We also investigated the internal structure and kinematics of general interstellar molecular clouds, which are often assumed to be clumpy and further to have hierarchical structure. We constructed a comprehensive model of the general interstellar clouds. By making use of three-dimension radiative transfer code and magnetohydrodynamics code, and, in particular, by developing a new method of analysing both single dish and interferometric observation altogether, we clarified the sub-structure of the molecular clouds and the nature of motions associated with the structure. We found useful infall tracers, HCN(1-0) and DCO+(2-1) which less suffered from the chemical depletion in the cores, and found that inward motions can be more active and their speeds may increase toward central regions of some evolved cores.
