It is important to understand how information is processed, represented, and retrieved as a distributed pattern in a network of neurons. The overall aim of the present project is to understand cortical population code, i.e., spatio-temporal activity patterns of cortical neurons, and apply this information to brain-computer interface technology. In the first project, we recorded and analyzed neuronal ensemble activities in prefrontal cortex (PFC) of rats learning new behavioral tasks or performing well-learned working memory tasks. We obtained evidence for overlapping and distributed representation of information in the PFC, found dynamic transformation of retrospective to prospective memory during delay period, and determined the time scale at which neuronal correlation may contribute to synergistic information transmission. In the second project, we have established a primate research facility, and determined the effect of eye movement on visual perception based on psychophysical experiments on humans and neurophysiological experiments on cats. In the third project, we recorded and analyzed multi-channel EEG in humans. We found dynamic interactions between alpha and theta components, and also determined interactions among different brain regions. In the fourth project, we developed a brain-computer interface that allowed the control of external devices based on somatosensory cortical signals in rats. We have submitted a patent application and agreed with a company for technology transfer. These results contribute meaningfully to the understanding cortical population co
