Total rainfall on the Daecheong reservoir basin in 2009 was 969mm 64% of which took place in June, July and August. Total rainfall on the Daecheong reservoir basin in 2009 was 969mm 64% of which took place in June, July and August. Rainfall in January, February, March, April, November and December combined was only 18% of annual total reflecting the typical temperate monsoon climate of Korea. The annual total rainfall was much smaller than the mean of previous 12 years (1998-2009) which was 1248 mm. Among the amount of monthly total rainfall that of July (426mm) was very high which was 44% of annual total. Along with the concentrated rainfall, massive amount of nutrients in the basin flowed into the reservoir which in turn served as promoter of phytoplankton propagation. As results period and intensity of phytoplankton bloom in the Daecheong reservoir was longer and higher compared to previous years.
At the upstream Jangkye point, as nutrient rich water body moved quickly into mid- and downstream, phytoplankton development was not high throughout the year. On the contrary, at Hoenam point of Daecheong reservoir, because water body with high content of nutrient stayed at the area for a long time during high temperature periods, cyanobacterial bloom developed in August and September at high intensity for extended period resulting in the announcement of algae alert for 47 days including 18 days of warning level of the alert system. At downstream Darn and Mooneui points, as the inflow of nutrient rich water body was later than other points, periods with maximum phytoplankton bloom was lagged and low temperature dwelling diatom was dominated during October and November.
