Purpose&contents
Interface between metal and oxide support is very important issue for the application of nanocatalysts, energy conversion, and nanoelectronics. It is challenging to study this interface with surface techniques because it is buried. The systems composed of
nanoparticle and oxide support exhibit relatively high area of buried interface which can be probed by the surface techniques. In this work, we aim at investigation of the structural, electrical, chemical and thermodynamic properties of metal nanoparticle and oxide interface with STM/AFM (scanning tunneling microscopy)/atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on understanding of these properties, we aim at controlling the interface for the better design of catalytic materials, and energy conversion devices. Experiment will be carried out under various gas condition (oxidizing, reducing and reaction conditions)
and temperature conditions.
Result
understanding the molecular scale correlation between
chemical, mechanical and electrical properties of metal nanoparticle and oxide interface. We shall use in-situ surface techniques under various environmental conditions including oxidizing, reducing and reaction conditions. We shall carry out
the following works.
1. We shall construct the model systems by using the colloid nanoparticle synthesis and self-assembled nanopatterning. Colloid nanoparticles includes single element, bimetallic and multicomponent nanoparticles.
2. Characterization of nanomechanical properties (friction, adhesion, modulus, and wear) with atomic force microscopy/friction force microscopy with nanometer scale resolution under various gas conditions will be carried out under various temperature
(100K-1000K) conditions.
3. Characterization of charge transport properties (current, conductance, and bandgap) with conductive-probe atomic force microscopy with nanometer scale resolution under various gas condition will be carried out. The electronic structure and
vibrational spectrum on the nanocatalyst will be characterized with XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and IR (infrared) spectroscopy.
4. Metal nanoparticle and oxide interface will be chemically modified via various techniques (gas dosing, thermal treatment, ion beam bombardment, and ultraviolet-Ozone treatment) and the change of materials properties will be investigated.
Expected Contribution
The size of market of catalysts is estimated to 16 billion US dollar in 2009. The smart design of catalytic materials with better performance and lower price is very important direction in chemical industry. Study and control of metal nanoparticle and
oxide interface is very important and has broad impact to design the high performance catalytic material and to develop energy conversion devices.
