Purpose&contents The Sesong and Hwajeol formations of the Taebaek Group yield some representative Furongian trilobites including the Tsinaniidae, Ptychaspididae, and Richardsonellidae. Ptychaspididae and Richardsonellidae are currently included in the Order Asaphida, while Tsinaniidae, a member of the Order Corynexochida in the current classification, was recently suggested to belong to the Asaphida. However, no ontogenetic studies have been done for these trilobite groups. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the current classification scheme of the Trilobita based on ontogenetic studies. The following taxa were scheduled for ontogenetic studies: Tsinania canens (Tsinaniidae) for the first year; Asioptychaspis subglobosa (Ptychaspididae) for the second year; and Haniwa quadrata (Richardsonellidae) for the third year. Result As originally planned, the ontogenetic studies of the trilobites from the Sesong and Hwajeol formation of Korea were successfully made for the following taxa: Tsinania canens (Tsinaniidae) for the first year; Asioptychaspis subglobosa (Ptychaspididae) and Haniwa sosanensis (Richardsonellidae) for the second year; and in addition the systematic study on the Eosaukia fauna and early evolution of the Sumardiidae for the third year. 1) Development of a ventral median suture in Tsinania canens suggests that the ventral median suture may have evolved polyphyletically and thus the current concept of the Asaphida should be revised. 2) The ontogeny of Asioptychaspis subglobosa also demonstrates that the ventral median suture did not evolve only once in the evolutionary history of trilobites and could have developed independently at least three times in the history of Cambrian trilobites. 3) The lack of globular asaphoid protaspis and ventral median suture suggests that the remopleuridioids do not belong to the Asaphida. In conclusion, the three trilobite groups, the Tsinaniidae, Ptychaspididae, and Richardsonellidae, do not belong to and may have evolved independently away from the Asaphida. Hence, the current concept of the Order Asaphida should be emended. Expected Contribution The main purpose of this study is to reevaluate the phylogeny of the Trilobita based on the examination of ontogeny of the Cambrian trilobites of Korea. The current classificatory scheme includes that the Ptychaspididae and Richardsonellidae are themembers of the Order Asaphida, and the Tsinaniidae was also suggested to belong to the Asaphida. However, the present study clearly demonstrates that the three groups (Tsinaniidae, Ptychaspididae, and Richardsonellidae) do not belong to and evolved independently from the Asaphida. The ontogenetic information obtained from the present study should be considered seriously in establishing the phylogeny and classification of the Trilobita in thefuture.
