Ⅲ. Development of new growing media for hydroponic culture
1. Selection and development of new mixed media for the fruit vegetables
(1) Plant growth such as plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight of cucumber and tomato was enhanced in reused rockwool + peatmoss (1:2, v/v) substrate. Plant growth in mixed media of reused rockwool and chestnut woodchips was the worst among all treatments. As the proportion of chestnut woodchips increased, plant growth decreased proportionally in all treatments. UR (Ca+) rockwool gave increased fruit yield in cucumber. Reused oyster mushroom substrate and reused winter mushroom substrate were gave increased growth in tomato.
(2) Among the 10 kind of substrates used , perlite, vermiculite, rockwool (2 kinds), refused rockwool, reused rockwool + peatmoss (1:1, v/v), reused cotten, reused substrate of oyster mushroom, reused substrate of winter mushroom, and reused substrate of button mushroom, reused substrate of winter mushroom was the best for the leaf area, total yield, brix degree, and vitamin C contents in cucumber. Substrate of reused cotten gave increased total yield, but the average fruit weight increased in the substrate of reused button mushroom.
(3) Irrigation by integrated solar radiation for cucumber cultivation grown in reused substrates was studied. Irrigation starting time of integrated light intensity for increase of yield was 300Wh.m-2 in reused substrate of rockwool, 150Wh. m-2 in reused rockwool + peatmoss substrate, 300Wh.m-2 in reused substrate of winter mushroom, and 450Wh.m-2 in reused substrate of oyster mushroom.
(4) In the development of new nutrient solution, the reused rockwool medium showed the best growth in the following composition: Macroelements (in me.L-1) N 12, P 3, K 7, Ca 5, Mg 2, and microelements (in ppm) Fe 3, B 0.5, Cu 0.02, Mo 0.01, Zn 0.05.
(5) In the development of new nutrient solution for increase of tomato yield, substrate of reused winter mushroom was the best when supplied with the microbe nutrient solution containing macroelements (in me.L-1) NO3 7, NH4 0.67, Ca 3, P 2, Mg 3, SO4 3, K 4, and microelements (in ppm) Fe 3, B 0.5, Mn 0.5 Zn 0.05, Cu 0.05 Mo 0.05 + Power-M (microbe) at 9L per 10a per week.
2. Selection and development of new mixed media for the leafy vegetables (1) In the leaf vegetables, a suitable medium was selected from six mixed media, such as reused rockwool, peatmoss, and chestnut bark in a hydroponic system using a non-woven fabric mat. Of these substrates, reused rockwool (100%) was the most proper for lettuce growth and in this medium growth period was shortened. Also, it was better than others in leaf length, number of leaves, leaf width, and fresh weight. On the other hands, lettuce growth in media containing chestnut woodchips was the worst. The growth in media containing peatmoss was relatively good.
(2) Effect of the hydroponic system of a non-woven fabric mat on the growth of 'Chungchima' lettuce was examined. Reused rockwool + peatmoss (1:1, v/v) medium gave the greatest number of leaves. However, the best leaf length was obtained in reused rockwool + peatmoss (2:1, v/v) medium. In the 'Chugrok' spinach, reused rock + peatmoss (1:1, v/v) medium gave greater leaf length and width than others.
(3) In the hydroponic system of a non-woven fabric mat, the growth of chrysanthemum increased with new nutrient solution containing macroelements (in me.L-1) NO3 12.75, NH4 1.25, Ca 5.0, P 3, Mg 3.0, SO4 3.0, K 7.5 me.L-1, and microelements (in ppm) Fe 3, B 0.5, Mn 1.0 Zn 0.05, Cu 0.05 Mo 0.05 + photosynthetic microbe at 3L per 10a per week.
(4) Applications of newly developed media to commercial farms were attempted.
Developed new media and solutions were applied in several farms. The growth of tomato, cucumber, leaf lettuce, spinach, and chrysanthemum was very good in all treatments. A guide booklet on how to use new media was prepared for farmers.
This book may be useful for hydroponic farmers.
3. Selection and development of new mixed media for the cut flowers
(1) The non-woven fabric mat hydroponic system was also applied to chrysanthemum culture. The most suitable media for the growth of chrysanthemum 'Puma' were 100% reused rockwool substrate and reused rockwool substrate + peatmoss medium (1:1, v/v). Reused rockwool + chestnut woodchips medium was the worst for the growth and flowering among all media.
(2) Effect of the hydroponic system of a non-woven fabric mat and pot size on the growth of chrysanthemum grown in the new mixed media was studied. Reused rockwool and reused rockwool + peatmoss (3:1, v/v) media contained in big size pot (8cm×8cm×8cm) gave three times more flower production than other smaller size pots (5.5cm×5.5cm×6.3cm or 4.5cm×4.5cm×5.3cm).
4. Standardization of analysis of physicochemical properties and analysis of physicochemical properties of newly developed media
Culture area of hydroponics increased every year in Korea. So types and constituents of substrate for hydroponics are very important. But the research of physical and chemical characteristics of substrates are different with countries and institutes. The unifications of analysis method is needed not only for analysts but also for farmers. European has much interest, but our country has no interest, in standardization of soil analysis. European Committee for Standardization (CEN) method for substrate analysis for such materials as cocopeat, vermiculite and perlite used in Korea was tested in the University of Seoul and got good results. But acceptance of this method for application in Korea must be discussed with Korean soil scientists in more details in the future.
