Ⅳ. Result and Recommendations
1. To Promote the Efficiency of the Stack
Study for manufacturing MEAs, the most important part of water electrolysis, was conducted following the first and second years of this research, continuously. In order to improve the performance of the catalyst, nano-sized catalysts were prepared by applying catalyst carrier to increase the active surface area. Also, MEAs were manufactured by CCD(Catalyst coated diffusion layer) and CCM(Catalyst coated membrane) with nano-sized catalyst.
M.E.A composed with two catalytic layer by electro-spraying carbon-supported Pt catalyst for cathode and synthesized nanoparticles IrRuO2 for anode were hot pressed and it showed the best performance. To replace commercial Nafion membrane which have problems with expensive cost, complicated production and supplement, SPPEK membrane was applied to MEAs. As a results, improved performance obtained due to the excellent proton conductivity.
2. Development and Evaluation of Components of High Pressurised stack, 150 bar
The components on electrolyser unit cell which produce high pressure hydrogen were designed by focusing on the safety and the prevention of a leak in hydrogen with high pressure. Diffusion layer which is support of membrane with thickness of 170 um, was changed the structure to prevent damage from the pressure of 150 bar.
Several conventional flow path with square ribs were removed. Instead of square ribs, Ti-mesh were stacked and used for the diffusion layer. Also, it may occur a separation between the components by the pressure.
In this case, the resistance between the components was minimized by inserting a proprietary pressure pad in order to prevent the increase in contact resistance between components.
To prevent a leak in hydrogen with high pressure, the gasket is designed to pile up 2 layers. Also, the thickness of the current feeder and the end plate were manufactured more 1.5 times thick than specification of designed model.
As a result of stack evaluation, the final project goal were changed to 150 bar which exceed original goal as 100 bar. Therefore, research were conducted by modifying the objective was to 150 bar. The final result in this study is 84%(@55℃) of current efficiency.
3. Evaluation of Durability of High Pressurised Hydrogen Generator, 150 bar 1Nm3H2/hr stack is designed, manufactured and operated with stacking several unit cell. A evaluation system of high pressure hydrogen generator is placed on safety chamber for safety. Water supplied from outside flows into oxygen/water separation tanks and then supply to the anodic camber of the stack.
In the anodic camber of stack, water is separated to oxygen and hydrogen ion by electrolysis, the water(un-reacted) and oxygen are moving to the separation tank and separated at the tank.
In cathode side of th stack, water and hydrogen generated by electrolysis reaction moves into hydrogen/water separation tank.
Separated water return to anode side, hydrogen gas flows to hydrogen gas dehumidification and the pressure of hydrogen gas is controlled by the back-pressure valve. For the safety, the system is designed by explosion proof, and the pressure 250 bar pressure for the system piping is allowed.
4. Numerical A nalysis of Components of High Pressurised stack, 150 bar (Sub study by POSTECH)
Stack is designed for high-pressure components are available, each component can not be the evaluated because of high pressure condition. To solve this problem, deformations of each component on high-pressure condition, and high-durability and safety through numerical analysis was performed.
The numerical results are;
① the stack having less than 10 bar as hydrogen pressure is need 30 mm of the end plate thickness
② the stack having 150 bar as hydrogen pressure is need more than 70 mm of end plate thickness to prevent a deformations due to high pressure.
In addition, the high pressure stack requires a high stack clamping force to prevent leakage of hydrogen from electrolysis cell due to its high pressure. High clamping force of the components in the stack may cause deformation of the gasket and the gasket deformation may cause deformation of the components inside the stack. The optimized stack clamping force can be allowed to prevent deformation of each component and can be produced within designed tolerance.
As a result of numerical analysis, in order to manufacture high pressure hydrogen gas as 150 bar, it is needed as 7500kgf •cm of appropriate stack clamping force.
Stack test was conducted applying this conditions.
5. Stability A nalysis of the High Pressurised Hydrogen Generator System, 150 bar (Sub study by Seogang Univ.)
To build the control system of electrolysis system, we analyzed the system by modeling and understood the possible risk and drew alternatives in first year.
Second year, we built a system to consistent with results of first step. Also, we analyzed, estimated and improved the model parameters for optimum control. In addition, by estimating the model parameters on the stack, the results of the developed model and the actual system were compared and synchronize. As a result of this research, exact model parameters were determined.
6. Development of Membrane(Sub study by M yungi Univ.)
Hydrocarbon electrolyte membrane which is replace to Dupont' s Nafion117 membranes was investigated to develop its performance.
During the study period, CL-SPEEK membrane by adding the HPA(heteropoly acid) surpassed performance the Nafion 117 in the tensile strength and the proton conductivity. To solve the problem of bleeding out of HPA, we replaced H+ to Cs+ which can reduce leaching of HPA in second year. In 3rd year, the addition of CeO2(Cerium oxide, Ceria) as radical scavenger improved the oxidation durability of solid electrolyte membrane. Polymer matrix of covalent cross-linked bond using silane functional group and adding of new chemical additive improved physical and chemical stability of membrane.
7. Development of A lternative Catalyst for Pt(Sub study by M yungi Univ.)
The reduction of usage of the Pt catalyst and reduction of the oxygen overvoltage of the anode were investigated in this research. To reduce the oxygen overvoltage of anode, anode catalyst is manufactured by impregnation-reduction methode with combination of Pt and other transition metals(M = Pd, Ni, Co, Rh, Ru) As a result, the bi or tri-metallic catalysts had increased electrochemically active surface area and low cell voltage than Pt catalyst. Also, to reduce quantity of Pt, cathode was replaced to Pd from Pt and anode was replaced to Pt-M' (M' = Ni, Pd, Co) from Pt. It showed similar electrochemical performance compared to Pt electrode.
