Because fossil fuels are limited in availability and their massive use results in global warming due to the emission of greenhouse gases, there is growing demand for energy from renewable sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and ocean tidal waves. Among such renewable energy systems, solar thermal generation systems (STGSs) have many unique advantages. STGSs are nonpolluting and indefinitely sustainable, as long as the sun exists. Also, it has potential for high efficiency because the control of the heliostat and the design of the receiver and storage have advanced.
Development for optimal control of heliostat system using configuration factor and solar tracking device
A heliostat is a sun-tracking reflector that reflects solar radiation onto a central receiver. Methods for controlling the heliostat can be divided into three types based on the production of the solar-tracking signal. The first is the sensor type. For example, there may be light sensors close to the target that send signals to motors so that they correct the alignment of the heliostat whenever the beam of reflected light drifts away from the target. Only the approximate directions of axes need to be known because the system is intrinsically self-correcting. However, this system has certain disadvantages, such as the requirement that the heliostat be manually realigned every morning and the fact that after long periods of cloudy weather, the reflected beam misses the sensors, so the system cannot correct the orientation of the heliostat. Because of these disadvantages, this design has not been commonly used.
