This project developed fiber-optic biosensors for the in situ real-time monitoring of toxicity of environmental samples, particularly to various EDCs, heavy metals, and chemical pollutants.
To develop a water monitoring system using optical and biological concepts for the detection and control EDCs, heavy metals, and chemical pollutants, we will develop the followings
1. Construct recombinant yeast and bacteria cells genetically modified to emit a bioluminescence signal in the presence of minute amounts of various water toxicants (e.g. EDCs and heavy metals).
2. Create a fiber optic flow through a real time monitoring device.
3. Integrate the new bioluminescent recombinant cells into the fiber optic flow through a real time monitoring device.
4. Laboratory testing: evaluation of the device efficiency to test various concentration of the different EDCs and heavy metals.
5. Environmental testing: Testing the quality of the water supply systems to identify potential pollution routes and presence of EDCs, heavy metals, chemical pollutants that jeopardize human health.
6. Antibody based immuno-fiber optic Bragg grating, SPR, SERS sensors to detect pesticide, chemicals, and heavy metals in water.
7. Optical fiber nanotip array sensors in combination with Bragg gratings, SPR, SERS, and bioluminescence sensor.
The application of optical fiber based nanosensors has become an area of significant interest and various methods have been developed to alleviate the problems arising from miniaturization. In this sense, optical fiber Bragg graiting, SPR, SERS, and bioluminescence probes present the highest level of miniaturization of sensor, allowing for chemical and biological sensing in inaccessible locations where the mechanical flexibility and the ability to transmit optical signals over a long distance make the use of optical fibers very attractive. In summary, fiber-optic biosensors will play a significant role in the development of biosensors because they can be easily miniaturized and integrated for the determination of different target compounds in a wide variety of application fields not only environmental monitoring but such as industrial process, food processing, and military and clinical applications.
