1. Effect of depth of hydroponic medium on growth and yield of two cut rose cultivars.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of depth of medium on growth and yield of two cut rose (R osa hybrida Hort.) cultivars, a standard type ‘Rock Fire’ and ‘Feel Lip’, in a hydroponic culture. Single node cuttings with a five-leaflet leaf were stuck to rockwool cubes (5 cm × 5 cm × 5 cm, UR, Korea) on June 8, 2011. After 6 weeks, rooted cuttings were transplanted into 4 kinds of medium (20 cm deep perlite, and 15 cm deep perlite, 25 cm deep perlite and 35 cm deep perlite, each covered with 5 cm deep coir) on July 20, 2011. Plant growth and cut flower quality were investigated from Nov. 2011 to Mar. 12, 2012. Plants grown on the medium of 35 cm perlite + 5 cm coir exhibited the greatest stem length, stem diameter, number of five-leaflet leaves per plant, and flower fresh weight in both cultivars. Both cultivars also showed more growth in the medium containing 15 cm perlite + 5 cm coir medium than the medium containing 20 cm perlite alone. All treatments showed a similar number of stems harvested per plant. This result suggested that deeper medium covered by a coir medium on top produced larger cut roses during the first year. Additional research is needed on the effect of depth of medium on growth and yield in the following years.
2. Effect of depth of hydroponic medium and coir on growth and yield of two cut rose cultivars during two years
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of depth of medium and coir covering on growth and yield of two standard cut rose (R osa hybrida Hort.) cultivars, ‘Rock Fire’ and ‘Feel Lip’, grown in a hydroponic culture for two years. Single node cuttings with a five-leaflet leaf were stuck to rockwool cubes (5 cm × 5 cm × 5 cm, UR, Korea) on June 8, 2011. After 6 weeks, rooted cuttings were transplanted on July 20, 2011 into the perlite medium with a depth of 20cm (control), or 15, 25, or 35cm and each covered with 5 cm deep coir. Plant growth, and cut flower yield and quality were assessed from Nov. 2011 to May 18, 2013. Plants grown in the 35cm perlite + 5cm coir medium showed the greatest stem length, stem diameter, number of five-leaflet leaves per plant, and flower fresh weight in both cultivars. Both cultivars also showed more growth in the medium containing 15cm perlite + 5cm coir medium than the medium containing 20cm perlite alone. All treatments showed a similar number of stems harvested per plant. Plants grown in the medium covered with coir exhibited concentrated growth of the roots in the coir, but not much in the perlite. Plants grown in the medium not covered with coir (control), however, exhibited widely spread growth of the root throughout the whole volume of the medium. The results also showed that deeper medium covered with coir on top produced larger cut roses during the two years of cultivation. Additional research is needed on the effect of depth of medium on growth and yield in the less deep medium.
3. Development of managing technique with harvesting and bending stem of rose grown in hydroponic
The amount of leaves is primarily determinant for the production of roses. Bending the stems has become an essential part of rose cultivation in recent years to obtain a certain leaf area. The bent stems are the ' factory' for plant growth. Sugars are formed in the leaf from CO2 and H2O, and are used building blocks for the plant. The rate at which CO2 is taken up depends on light and temperature, but also on CO2 concentration, leaf position and leaf age. To obtain more insight into the function of the leaf, several kind of bending trying, and harvesting method were carried out.
The arching technique is an advanced method for cut rose cultivation that was developed in the late 80' s in japan. The technique knows a great success(Okhawa and Suematsu, 1999). Bending down the rose shoots instead of pruning results in rose stems of a better marketing quality, less blind shoots and a higher yield(Sarkka and Rita, 1999). The success is generally attributed to a higher carbohydrate content supplied to the flowering stem by the bent photosynthesising leaves. Indeed an increase in assimilate supply, induced by a greater number of mature leaves on the primary shoots, results in thicker and larger axillary shoots(Marcelis-Van Acker, 1994) Apart from the increased assimilate supply an altered hormone balance might influence the flower development(Kool, 1996). However, it is also known that the photosynthesis rate of shaded leaves changes. In shade-grown leaves, light saturated photosynthesis rate occurs at much lower photosynthetic photon flux densities(PPFD) than in leaves grown in full sunlight(Bjorkman, 1981. Jones, 1992. Lambers et al, 1998). At the same time, respiratory losses are kept as low as possible. Several factors contribute to the differences in the photosynthetic behaviour of sun and shade leaves; shade leaves tend to have less chlorophyll with morphologically different chloroplast and a significantly lower enzyme content, as well as an altered leaf anatomy compared to sun leaves. As a consequence, the undermost bent stems in a rose canopy might not contribute to the carbon gain, especially under low natural light intensities.
Harvesting or Pruning methods not only determine the architecture of a crop, they also have a great effect on yield and quality. For rose top dominates the growth of the lower buds. Partly as a result of the hormone production(auxin) in the growing points, the lower buds are kept from sprouting. By removing the growing point, for example by pinching or harvesting the stem or bending the stem, the lower buds get the chance to sprout. Harvesting on a bud located on a lower order is called harvested by undercut. The stem lower order is always thicker, and the buds which may be present and which are the harvest stimulated by the harvest are always of a better quality. Harvest by undercut is therefore usually aimed at rejuvenation with a better quality sprouting. The research for the correct harvest point is labour intensive, more good production, and for this reason harvest methods have been developed, in combination with the installation of growing systems, with the aim to increase the money. Harvesting position on the stem and harvesting method of shoots were investigated for more good production and quality with three spray roses from March to November 2011. Harvesting position conducted by uppercut from base to higher position on the stem of 1 cm, 3 cm, 5 cm respectively. Raising harvest point on the stem results higher cut flower yield(stems/m2) but lower cut flower weight and marketable flower ratio. No differences in cut flower yield and quality between base cut and 1 cm cut from the base. Cut flower weight and marketable flower ratio also showed no differences between base cut and 1cm cut from base. But as raised cutting height over 3 cm flower weight was decreased about 10 g than the former lower height. Marketable flower yield showed no differences from base cut to 3 cm cut from base but it was remarkably decreased of 65.1 stems in 5 cm cut from base. Therefore it’s better to keep to 3 cm of cutting height from base at harvesting time. Stem diameter of shoots from the same plant after cutting with same height was proportional to mother stem’s diameter (the former shoot). Though cutting practiced with low cut of thin shoots which was below 5 mm diameter resulted in low marketable flower ratio, high blind shoots ratio and which tend to increase the higher cutting height. These results suggest that base cut to 3 cm cut may be the most favorable for marketable flower production of rose ' Yellow King' and then it’s better to cut away thin shoots below 5 mm stems or bend down for leaf package after pinching. Marketable flower yield no difference by harvest with the same time all shoots and step by step with flowering shoots year round.
This study was conducted to examine effect of bending stem diameter on insurance of suitable leaf amount and good production of two roses in hydroponic culture from March to November 2011. The bigger bending stem diameter to produce marketable flower, the larger fresh weight and an angle of bending stems but leaf area index(LAI) was highest of 3.5 with bending 6∼8 mm stems and lowest 2.7 with bending 9∼11 mm stems. Marketable flower yield per ㎡ showed the same tendency with LAI and marketable flower ratio, flower weight, stem diameter was proportional to bending stem diameter. Optimal stem lengths which have good harmony and balanced with stem length and flower volume was 60∼80 cm but on the contrary, salability of cut flowers was decreased with larger stems due to the less flower volume than stem and leaf. This good stems produced 8% more through bending 6∼8 mm stems then bending 9∼11 mm stem, on the other hand too big stem with less salability produced 10% more by bending 9∼11 mm stem then 6∼8 mm stems. Bending with larger stems resulted in decreased cut flower yield through less leaf package and larger stems. It came to conclusion that it was better bending 6∼8 mm stems for insurance of suitable leaf package and marketable flower yield after bending.
Additional studies also carried out a number of bending stem, bending methods, an angle of bending stem have positive effect for more production and quality of cut roses. Bending with 5 stems have most leaf package but it was not resulted most production, because take long time to finished bending practice, and lower harvest shoots of early stage. Bending with 1 stems also resulted lower production because of less leaf package. High production resulted from bending with 3 stems stable leaf package year round.
Usually a rose grower breaking or crushing of stem at bending practice, and bind the bending stems with rope to prevent rise up. Breaking or crushing of stem at bending practice contribute to larger bending angle compare to natural bending without injury on the stem, it promote top dominance of knuckle base. As a result of which bending stem have less leaf package and low product, and also many stems were died out during year round, and have to be supplemented more stems for bending. In conclusion recommend natural bending without injury on the stem have long life, and good leaf package and good product. A angle of bending stem connected with bending method, stem thickness, stem weight. Over the angle of 60° it caused low side shoot and leaf package of bending stem, but no influenced in the range the angle of 0° to 40°.
4. Effect of mist treatment on the growth and quality of cut rose ‘Hanmaum’ during summer
During summer in Korea, the excessively high temperature causes growth retardation and quality reduction in cut roses grown in greenhouse. Mist treatments were conducted to reduce the temperature and avoid quality reduction of cut roses, and the change oftemperature in the greenhouse, growth and quality of cut roses, and injuries caused by insects or fungi were evaluated. Daily maximum temperature reduced as the number of mist treatment increased, resulting in 6℃ reduction by mist treatment for 10 seconds at 5 min interval. This effect of temperature reduction was occurred only when it was over 4 0℃ in maximum temperature of greenhouse, and not when it was less than 40℃ or rainy and/or cloudy day. Plant height and fresh weight of cut roses were increased at the range of 10∼20% by mist treatment. As frequency of mist treatment increased, however, vase life of cut rose was largely shortened and the injuries by scale insect or pest were increased. In conclusion, it is recommended that mist treatment must be used when the daily maximum temperature in a green house is over 40℃ and forecasting for disease or insects is conducted as well.
5. Intermittent supplemental lighting during the night cold period for heating affects growth, flowering, yield, and vase life in cut rose production
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of year-round supplemental lighting on air temperature of greenhouse, growth, flowering, marketable yield, and postharvest quality of single-stemmed cut rose (R osa hybrida ‘Feel Lip’) during the fall-winter-spring period in southern Korea. Four kinds of lamps with different light quality were used for greenhouse-grown cut rose plants to control minimum temperature of greenhouse after sunset: light emitting diode (LED), metal halide (MH), high pressure sodium (HPS), and nano-carbon fiber infrared (NCFI) lamp. During the fall-winter-spring period, minimum temperature of all the areas, treated with intermittent lighting after sunset, was higher (0.8 ∼2.2℃ increase) than those of area exposed to no light (control). The contribution of supplemental lighting to greenhouse heating was affected by supplemental light quality and their irradiation time depending on seasonal changes. On the basis of results from cut flowers harvested 3 times in spring, autumn and winter, supplemental lighting mostly accelerated flowering with decreasing time to 50% cumulative flowering (3∼7 days decrease) overall seasons. Intermittent lighting at night mostly increased vase life of cut rose with improving water balance and relative fresh weight. Especially, year-round lighting of HPS lamp most effectively promoted flowering, enhanced production and quality of cut flowers showing the largest beneficial effects for the darker and colder season of the year. The electrical efficiency for lighting was the best in LED, followed by MH, HPS and NCFI lamps. These results indicate that intermittent lighting of HPS lamp during night cold months can be strategically used to enhance growth, productivity, quality, and the energy efficiency in a greenhouse-grown cut rose during night cold months of the year.
