1. Analysis on forest and ecological environment and development of agro-forestry management system for producting high-quality forest products
1) By the results of the analysis on cultivation land in Jangsu-gun for Omija (Schisandra chinensis) using GIS, of entire forest area (39,215 ha) were the 3.1%(1,199ha) for the suitable site, 23.4%(9,175ha) for the accessible site. Also, 40%(662.56ha) was suitable site and 29.1%(4,837.68ha) was to be proved as accessible site for Mulberry(Morus alba L.) in Buan-gun.
2) The best tree-growth models were analyzed as the Schumacher equation fitted to the diameter data of Larix kaempferi and Qucerce serrata stands and the Chapman-Richards equation fitted to the diameter data of Pinus densiflora stand. And the best tree-growth models were analyzed as the Schumacher equation fitted to the height data of Larix kaempferi stand and the Gompertz equation fitted to the height data of Pinus densiflora and Qucerce serrata stands.
3) The agro-forestry management system should be vitalized by focusing the shirt-term incomes because of the long-term profitability of timber production. Forest management focused on timber production and combined forest management could be maintained in the long term once forest profitability are assured by shirt-term incomes.
2. Runoff characteristics of nutrients and pesticides at Schizandra chinensis Baillon and Disocorea battas cultivation sites in open and forest culture field
1) The concentration of Tot-N and Tot-P in soil were increased after application of basal compost and fertilizer, and were progressivwely decreased with increasing rainfall-runoff events. Both of these two concentrations in S. chinensis Baillon and D. battatas cultivation sites were greater in open culture field than that of forest culture field. Also, runoff loading of Tot-N and Tot-P from S. chinensis Baillon and D. battatas cultivation sites in forest culture field were smaller than that of open field. These results showed that forest culture have a condition fro the production of agricultural products without nutrient accumulation
2) In S. chinensis Baillon and D. battatas cultivation sites, the runoff loading of suspended solids from two culture field were 431 kg/10a and 2,721 kg/10a, respectively. This result showeed that the soil erosion in forest culture field was higher over 6 times than that of open culture field. Therefore, protect facility of soil erosion are needed to minimize the soil erosion from in S. chinensis Baillon and D. battatas cultivation sites in forest culture field.
3. Research and development of multi-functional new biomaterial for development of forest products of highquility.
1. Omija (Schisandra chinensis)
Anti-plate aggregation activities of Schisandra chinensis fruits against plate aggregation induced by arachidonic acid (AA), collagen, platelet activation factor (PAF), and thrombin were evaluated and compared with those of aspirin. The active constituents of S. chinensis fruits were isolated as gomisin N and pregomisin. Based on the IC50 values, pregomisin and gomisin N were effective in inhibiting plate aggregation induced by AA (96.5 and 153.3 μM) and PAF (49.3 and 122.4 μM). Pregomisin and gomisin N were more potent plate inhibitors than aspirin against PAF. Taken together, these results indicate that gomisin N and pregomisin may be useful for the inhibition of PAF.
2. Yam (Dioscorea japonica)
The acaricidal activity of essential oil from Dioscorea japonica roots against house dust and stored food mites was examined using the impregnated fumigant bioassay. The active component of D. japonica roots, isolated by silica gel column chromatography and high performance liquid analyses. Lethal dose 50 (LD50) values of paeonol (2’-hydroxy-4’-methoxyacetophenone) were 1.29 and 1.78 ㎍/cm3 against Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus, repectively. The acaricidal activity of paeonol against Tyrophagus pteronyssinus was 2.28 ㎍/cm3. Compared to the commercial acaricide N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET), paeonol was found to be 19.52, 10.17, and 5.96 times more toxic against D. farinae, D. pteronyssinus, and T. pteronyssinus, respectively. These results suggest that paeonol may be useful as a preventive agent to control the growth of house-dust and stored-food mite populations.
3. Mulberry (Morus alba L.)
Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of materials isolated from the methanol extract of mulberry fruits were evaluated. The active constituent of the mathanol extract derived from mulberry fruits was isolated by silica gel and LH-20 column chromatographies and was identified as morin by electron ionization mass spectrometer, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Base on the IC50 values, the antioxidant activities of morin exhibited potent inhibition according to 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (30.0 ㎍/mL) and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (71.0 ㎍/mL) radical scavenging assays. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of morin showed moderate (++) inhibition against Streptococcus mutans at both 5 and 2 mg/disc, according to paper disc diffusion assays, indicating morin isolated from mulberry fruits could be a useful natural agent for the management of antioxidant and antibacterial treatments.
