I. R&D objectives and necessity
Aging is accompanied by many physical changes.Additionally, aging is accompanied by emotional and mental changes, particularly memory loss and depression owing to mild cognitive impairment.
○ Korea is still in the initial stage of manufacturing silver products that cater to the special needs and demands of elderly consumers; the Korean silver market is not well-stocked with these products.
○ Against this backdrop, this study aims to develop a functional mat tailored to the special needs of elderly and disabled people with reduced mobility or sensory impairment; the use of this mat will enhance their comfort and physical well-being in daily activities and provide them with pleasant and healthy sensory stimuli.
○ Most importantly, it will give them with emotional comfort that is directly associated with healthy, deep sleep. The multisensory stimulation technologies and therapies to be introduced are far-infrared-induced thermal stimulation therapy, vibro-kinetic therapy, and sound therapy. The microvibrational stimulation transmitted throughout the entire body can stimulate the atrophied muscles of elderly people with little mobility, and the functional music attuned to the vibrations can mitigate their depression and emotional numbness. Furthermore, the micro-vibrations can be effectively applied to prevent pressure ulcers in elderly people with little awareness or those having difficulties with changing body postures.
II. R&D content and scope
The aim of this study is to develop a multisensory mat that can improve the living environment of the elderly population through continuous use, even in cases of normal or slightly impaired mobility; the use of this mat would also prevent immobility-related problems such as pressure ulcers.
The envisioned multisensory mat consists of a sensory vibration system that facilitates a full-body perception of therapeutic heat and functional music by using carbon-based positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heating elements that ensure deep penetration of heat and guarantee safety in usage, even for those whose sense of temperature changes is impaired.
