Multifunctional yarns are required for diverse applications, like clothing that protects soldiers and provides sensing, communication, energy harvesting, and energy storage capabilities. Woven fabrics from such yarns could provide electrodes for high performance batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells that might be imbedded in vehicle shells, as well as textiles for catalytic conversion, hydrogen storage, and active oxygen generation for self-cleaning and destruction of biological threads. Despite important advances, critical problems remain: (1) most functional and multifunctional materials are unspinnable using known technologies, (2) nanopowder and nanofiber functionality often degrades when accessible surface area decreases during processing, and (3) coating nanoparticles or nanofibers on yarns after yarn spinning can decrease loading levels and durability.
Collaborative research to solve this problem is proposed between the Alan G. MacDiarmid Nanotech Institute of the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and the Center for Bio-Artificial Muscle and Dept. of Biomedical Engineering at Hanyang University (HYU). The PIs (Ray Baughman of UTD and Seon Jeong Kim of HYU) are already collaborating in the carbon nanotube area, which has involved international researcher exchanges and has so far produced one publication and a manuscript for Nature.
Our approach involves twist-based spinning of carbon nanotube sheets or sheet wedges (the host) that are overlaid with up to 99 wt. % of one or more other functional materials (the guest). Whether the overlaid functional material comprises nanoparticles, nanofibers or larger guests, we have recently shown that sheet-derived helices in the resulting yarns contain this functional material in a complex spiral, or a combination of spirals, whose structure critically depends upon twist level and various geometrical and mechanical parameters. The observed ability of a trace amount of carbon nanotubes to hold up to 99 wt. % of otherwise unspinnable nanopowder or nanofiber in useful yarn form reflects the higher-than-steel gravimetric strength of the scrolled nanotube sheets, which are obtained using UTD’s solid-state process for sheet fabrication by draw from special types of carbon nanotube forests.
The project focus on developing biscrolled yarns and textiles for battery and fuel cell electrode applications was chosen because of the urgent need for improved technologies for electrical energy storage and fuel-cell-based electrical energy generation. Project provided advances are planned in electrode electrochemical performance, mechanical robustness, and mechanical flexibility that could provide (1) increased power and energy densities (2) multifunctional applicability where electrode strength and flexibility is utilized, like for energy storage in vehicle panels and electronic textiles; (2) deployability for both ultra-large and very small devices, (3) elimination of noble metal catalysts from fuel cell electrodes, and (4) the ability to harvest and store electrical energy in the human body. While project focus is on fuel cell and battery electrodes based on biscrolled yarns, project research will provide advances in fabrication, process upscale, and in experimental and theoretical understanding of structure and properties that will be important for all applications of biscrolled yarns.
By making presently unspinnable highly functional nanomaterials and micron size materials spinnable, our biscrolling process for the fabrication of multifunctional yarns could enormously expand the applications potential of yarns, thereby leading to job creation and new and strengthened companies in Korea and the United States. Flexible textile-based batteries woven or sewn into clothing or protective vests could power sensors and communication equipment for emergency responders and soldiers, and drug delivery systems for the infirm. Likewise, batteries and fuel cells based on strong, high performance woven electrodes could be incorporated in vehicle panels, thereby reducing vehicle weight by providing both structural and electrochemical function. On a smaller scale, perhaps useful for application in the human body, a twisted pair of biscrolled yarn electrodes for an energy storing or energy harvesting device could have the diameter of a human hair. More generally, use of biscrolled yarns (and derived fabrics) as electrodes for biofuel cells may help solve key problems that have interfered with biofuel cell application for converting the chemical energy in glucose to the electrical energy needed for such implantable devices as biosensors, pacemakers, pumps for active drug delivery, and artificial muscles.
