Ⅳ. Results of the research and development
1. Development of high performance and energy-saving polymer concrete by utilizing recycled aggregate and industrial wastes
Recycled polymer concrete with high strength having compressive strength of between 85 and 97MPa and flexural strength of between 17.9 and 22MPa depending on the amount of binder was developed and it was also found that the concrete developed had very high durability factor as well as excellent acid resistance as the rates of weight loss were less than 1.5% and 7% respectively after 300 cycles of freezing and melting and deposition for 8 weeks with 20% sulfuric acid solution. In addition, ground granulated oyster shell, a kind of fishery wastes, was used as filler of the polymer concrete and the result showed the dynamic characteristics similar to the polymer concrete using calcium carbonate, the filler material frequently used in the past, suggesting that it can be effectively and widely utilized.
2. Development of porous polymer concrete with high strength and durability for permeability pavement
It was found that both porosity and permeability coefficients tended to decrease as the amount of binder increased regardless of aggregate size, and the porosity and permeability coefficients were 18% or more and 1×10-2
cm/s and more respectively in any and all types of mix. It was also noticed that the compressive strength tended to increase as the amount of binder increased, and, specifically, the compressive strength of 18MPa or more was shown when the amount of binder was 7% or more. The result also showed that the concrete had a very high durability as the rates of weight loss were less than 5% and 3% respectively after 300 cycles of freezing and melting and deposition for 12 weeks with 10% sulfuric acid solution. If consideration is given to the fact that degraded durability is the most serious problem in the existing cement porous concrete, the porous polymer concrete is expected to have a great advantage in terms of strength and durability when it is used in permeability pavement.
3. Development of the high performance and energy-saving Green Block with rainfall infiltration
It was found that the porosities of the rainfall infiltration type Green Block by different shapes with porous structures and the rainfall infiltration type Green Block with fiber reinforcement were 24% and 22% respectively, indicating that they significantly exceeded the criteria of porosity of 8% for permeable asphalt pavement, and the coefficients also exceeded the criteria of 1×10-2㎝/s for the permeable asphalt mixture. In addition, the flexural strength of the Green Block was 10MPa or more regardless of the types of block, which exceeded the criteria of the flexural strength of 5MPa for blocks designed for driveway and sidewalk. In the irrigation system model test on permeable block pavement for rainfall intensities of 50mm/hr, 100mm/hr, 150mm/hr and 200mm/hr, the permeable block pavement not only resulted in delay of rainfall runoff time but also led to reduction of runoff after rainfall, which indicates that the effects of runoff reduction and underground water increase can be expected when it is used in permeability pavement.
4. Development of Green Blocks for vegetation to create scenery and green area
Seeds of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass were sown to the vegetation polymer blocks and the initial germination began 4 to 6 days after the seeds were sown regardless of height of the blocks with the rate of initial germination of 65% and 60% respectively. The degree of land-cover was also excellent with 8 points or more at the time when 4 weeks elapsed from the date of seeding regardless of types of the plant and height of the blocks, and the length of growth of cool-season grasses was 5 to 7cm at the time when 8 weeks elapsed from the time of the seeding. The roots of the cool-season grasses of which seeds were sown to the blocks with height of 5cm as well as 10cm were seen to penetrate through the whole blocks at the time when 20 weeks elapsed from the time of the seeding, and the lengths of the roots of the tall fescue and perennial ryegrass that penetrated through the blocks with height of 5cm were 15cm and 20cm, respectively. As germination and growth and development of plants applied to the porous polymer blocks continued smoothly, it seems that they can be effectively applied to environment-friendly greening execution of slopes and revetments.
5. Site application of the Green Blocks for driveways and sidewalks and the rainfall infiltration type Green Blocks
In order to evaluate the site application possibility of the Green Block made by recycled polymer concrete of many different shapes and having high strength and durability, the rainfall infiltration type Green Block for permeability pavement and Green Block with fiber reinforcement and high toughness, experimental on-site execution was performed at the entrance of K National Park, and degradation of strength of the blocks, reduction of permeability coefficient, resistance and durability after freezing-melting cycle, etc. were evaluated after the field application of the blocks. It was found that crack, fall of surface and breakage, etc. did not occur to the blocks at the time when three months elapsed from the date of the execution regardless of the shape and strength of the Green Block and stability of the pavement layer underneath the block pavement was also excellent as deflection of block pavement did not appear. On the other hand, when the cracks on the rainfall infiltration type Green Block by shape were evaluated, the evaluation result was very good regardless of the shapes of block, however, it was observed that some aggregate fell from the corners and edges of the blocks.
