Due to recent global warming and high oil prices and energy security issues, there is world wide growing interest in the development and application of small and medium-sized reactors (SMRs), in view of enhancement of safety and security, waste management, and flexibility in designs and siting. Due to recent global warming and high oil prices and energy security issues, there is world wide growing interest in the development and application of small and medium-sized reactors (SMRs), in view of enhancement of safety and security, waste management, and flexibility in designs and siting. Specifically SMRs address deployment needs for smaller grids and lower rates of increase in demand. SMRs are designed with modular technology, pursuing economies of series production, factory fabrication and short construction times.
In the USA, current Obama's administration decided in 2012 to support development of SMRs with 452 million dollars in the next six years. Currently two SMRs- mPower and Nuscale are selected by US Department of Energy.
In the case of Korea, recent demonstration of strong opposition against installation of large capacity 765 KV transmission lines in the area of Milyang in Kyung Sang Bookdo Province tells us that addition of large size electricity power plants in the future will not be easy. In this aspect, SMRs will have good prospects.
Through demonstration and export of a ompeting 100 MW SMART SMR, which received standard design certificate in July 2012, Korea will be in a position to be a worldwide first runner in SMR market of several hundred trillion in the future.
This will also provide a important momentum for Korea to accelerate of development of Na cooled KALIMER SMR and LBE cooled URANUS to the worldwide top level, competing with USA, RF and EU.
Construction of SMRs by small and medium industries in many rural areas in Korea as a part of an aggressive scale of investment over the years will improve local and rural economy and work-forces
