There are increasing energy demands from renewable energy sources owing to the limited supply of fossil fuels and the greenhouse effect by CO2 emission. Since the energy delivery through conversion systems such as solar cells and wind turbines is intermittent, the development of large-scale energy storage systems has become essential. Among several large-scale rechargeable battery systems, sodium-sulfur (NAS) batteries were successfully commercialized into the market by NGK insulators, Ltd. of Japan. However, because the company dominates the sodium-sulfur battery market in terms of technology level and intellectual properties, it is very difficult for other companies to enter the market.
As alternatives, redox flow battery (RFB) systems have recently attracted much attention due to their potential and advantages of low cost, low temperature operation, long cycle life, etc. RFBs store and convert electrical energy using surface redox reactions on both negative and positive electrodes, which are in each electrolyte (anolyte and catholyte) separated by an ion exchange membrane.
In order to commercialize the RFB systems, the main components of them such as bipolar plates, electrodes, ion exchange membranes should be developed.
The purpose of this project is to develop bipolar plates (BPs) and electrodes with high durability for non-aqueous redox flow batteries. A bipolar plate is working to connect the positive and negative electrodes in a cell stack, which should have high corrosion resistivity and electrical conductivity. In order to improve the durability of BPs, carbon composite BPs were prepared. After incorporation of conducting carbon black powder into graphite, it was observed that BP had enhanced corrosion resistivity and stable cycle performance after 500 cycles in all vanadium RFBs. Metal-carbon composite BPs were also developed, which demonstrated increased electrical conductivity as well as good durability.
For application to non-aqueous RFB systems, BPs which were developed in this project presented enhanced corrosion resistivity and durability.
A RFB electrode provides reaction sites for reduction and oxidation of active species. Thus, it should have good catalytic effect and durability. For an aqueous RFB system (all vanadium), the surface of carbon felt material, which is commonly used in the all vanadium system, was modified with various methods such as mild oxidation, oxygen plasma treatment, and gamma ray irradiation.
After surface modifications, the surface area and number of surface functional groups of carbon felt electrodes were increased, and energy efficiency of the cell was improved. For non-aqueous redox flow batteries, carbonaceous materials and precious metals as electrode materials were usually used. In this project, various non-precious metals were tested in metal-complex and organic electrolyte systems.
Among them, some metals (Ni, Cu, etc) showed catalytic effects for redox reactions of metal complex active species. To increase the surface area of electrodes, porous metal structures such as foams were employed for electrodes.
As expected, it was demonstrated that the metal foam electrodes had increased
current density in cyclic voltammetry measurements. And it was found that
carbon coating on the foam is effective to increase the catalytic effect for redox
reactions.
