A. Development of the Walking Activity Demand Estimation Technology
○ To develop the walking activity demand estimation technology, the necessity and importance of studies on walking were reviewed, and a unit model was established together with a literature study for the demand estimation.
○ In the establishment of the unit model for demand estimation, diverse influential factors of walking activities were considered to establish the unit walking activity demand model. The main influential factors included the 3Ds (density, diversity, and design), facilities (buildings), district characteristics (residential, commercial, and business), submarkets (use arrangement), and spatial distribution (residence neighborhood environment).
○ To verify the reliability of the empirical study, the most explanatory and reliable model was determined via a test statistics comparison with the model values.
○ The most explanatory empirical study was the analysis of the relationship between the physical street environment and walking activities, followed by the analysis of the connection between the use area and walking activities.
B. Development of the Walking-behavior-based Path Selection Prediction Technology
○ To develop the walking-behavior-based path selection prediction technology, theories and case studies on walking-behavior-based path selection and the walking path selection estimation methodology were reviewed. In addition, the path selection was predicted based on the behavior of the pedestrian using a field-based questionnaire survey and floating population survey data.
○ A microscopic database of walking networks, populations, industries, and land use by area throughout Seoul was established.
○ To develop the walking path selection prediction technology, an empirical walking path selection behavior analysis was conducted, and the influential factor model for the walking path selection prototype, walking satisfaction, walking speed, and sensory walking distance was established.
○ The walking-behavior-based path selection prediction model was established based on the shortest distance selection and the sensory distance of the walking environment, and the results of the models with physical and emotional distances were comparatively analyzed.
C. Development of the Walking Activities Promotion Technology
○ To develop the walking activities promotion technology, the study was conducted in separate steps—first, through a questionnaire survey and analysis of its results for the determination of the planning factors; and second, through verification of the integrated walking activities promotion model.
○ To verify the integrated walking activities promotion model, the data from the first and second questionnaire surveys were used to establish the variables that influenced the walking activities satisfaction, and sequential logistic regression analysis and Kruskal-wallis non-parametric variance analysis were conducted to quantitatively analyze the factors that influenced the satisfaction.
○ The factors that significantly influenced the walking satisfaction were the length of the sidewalk, the installation of a driveway boundary, the presence of a sidewalk pavement, smoke/noise, the pedestrian passage, the number of and intervals between crosswalks, the signal frequency, the convenience facility guidance system, sales facilities, and rest spaces.
D. Development of Guidelines for the Walking Activities Promotion and Management System
○ As the final section of this study, in the development of the guidelines and management system, the results of the research and development were used to derive the guidelines. In addition, the study was not limited to the basic study, but was further progressed to the stage wherein the management system was established to promote walking activities.
○ As for the guidelines, the basic data for them were collected by reviewing preceding studies, guideline cases, and walking-related legal systems in and out of Korea.
○ As for the walking activities promotion management system, the plan for establishing the integrated system and the management system was derived by examining the development trend and cases.
